Stayed at Kathmandu Guest House for a few nights the last couple of weeks. I paid for the standard room. Generally all ok. Airport transfers are not available despite my asking. I booked through Expedia where there didn't seem to be an option to order a transfer. I then emailed the hotal through the generic email but got no reply. I asked for a transfer back to the airport but this was rejected saying that it was only upon arrival. In short, forget about the transfers despite the advertising.

The hotel is well located and has good security. Power shortages occur at various times throughout the day which restricts things like WiFi and using power points. Not the hotels fault, it's just Nepal.

I would stay again but get an air conditioned room next time and bring a towell.

Room Tip: Choose a room with air conditioning.

Dear Michael,
Namaste,

Thank you for your stay at KGH and your review to us. We really appreciate your comments and suggestions.

About airport transfers, we do provide free airport pick up to all our guests from the International airport to our hotel, given us the flight details at least 48 hours in advance. However, for drop off back to the airport there is a nominal charge if you would like to use our hotel vehicle which is readily available anytime.

We also would like to apologize you not receiving back an email from us regarding your airport transfer queries. We will make sure it will not happen again with you or our any other guests.

Thank you so much again and hope to see you soon at KGH.

Regards,
Pragya Tuladhar

This was a great stay. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and well-maintained and the room was very comfortable. I had a mid-level room with a bathroom and two twin beds. You get what you pay for and KGH also has nicer, larger rooms, and more hostel-like rooms. I had a few packages delivered there and found the front desk very willing to help. There is a money-change desk in the hotel and an ATM on the hotel grounds which was very convenient. The shops at the hotel are more expensive than outside the gate, but that’s to be expected. The location at KGH is right in the heart of the tourist district which made it very easy – and safe – to walk around and find restaurants, shops, and taxis. Can’t forget to mention that KGH has a long history of hosting exotic guests – including Jimmy Carter and Ricki Martin!

Right in the middle of Kathmandu, in the main tourist area, we really enjoyed our short stay. It was very clean and comfortable, if a little basic with a lovely view over the garden. It was an oasis of calm in a very busy, crowded city. We loved the quirkiness and the character of the building - a great place to stay. We ate in the restaurant and enjoyed the varied menu and the ambience of the dining area. There was a Nepali folk band playing on the night we stayed which added to the great atmosphere

Booked at the Kathmandu Guest Via booking.com a deluxe double room.
We were giving a room in the new wing. It was rather small with two separate beds which we requested them to join. There is a small sitting area with only one chair, where the room is for two people, of course you can always use the desk chair, but it's not very comfortable. Room was clean and quite, bathroom basic with a shower with had either very hot water or mildly warm, but ok.
First evening we ate at the restaurant. Food was ok but you have to pay your bill there as they have separate accounts from the hotel, I found it annoying as we didn't have much cash at that time. Also the same applies for room service which is even more annoying as they don't have change on them and have to come back to bring it.
What I loved most was the location being at the heart of Thamel yet being in an oasis with beautiful garden, it felt great. What I didn't like was the breakfast, when we ordered tea and toasts and waited more than twenty minutes. They provided a small buffet with fruit salad, cornflakes, some stuff I didn't look at and toast which has been toasted well in advance and is dry and cold, Nescafé, tea and some chemical orange juice too sweet for me and only the color made me think it might be orange juice.
There's free wifi available at the restaurant, but there again you have to be patient as the connection is very very slow, therefore I didn't bother trying to buy wifi in the room if it was so slow across the street at the pizzeria and in other places it was free and working way better!
I think some rooms must be cheaper than the one we booked which cost $92 a night, not sure it was really worth that much. This was a last minute booking we did, so we were glad to have it.

Kathmandu Guest House would like to thank you for your stay and the review. We hope you had a great time in Nepal and at KGH.

The room service problem you had to go through was not right. We will make sure that there are changes in the system for the best. Also, the free wifi at the restaurant and the courtyard gets a little slow as many of our guests are using it. We also have a business center with few desktop computers where you can use internet for free as well. The prepaid ones are always available.

We thank you again and hope to see you soon in the near future.

I had the pleasure of staying in KGH for a couple of nights and have to say, in my mind, that it stands apart from the rest in Kathmandu. Both Uttam and Nabin made me feel very welcome and they acted like 'your wish is my command!' KGH is safe, comfortable, peaceful and a great place to meet others. The entire staff seem to possess a mission to please there customers.

Room Tip: Rooms in the wing renovated in 2012.

Can't comment on the hotel as we've never stayed there but I do feel the urge to write an updated report on the restaurant.

Glad to say it is still one of the best places in KTM for a tandoori meal. The alfresco dining area, mostly covered by a large awning to shield those cloudbursts, has a tandoor range in full view where the chefs prepare the food ready for blasting over the glowing coals.

They have perfected their marinading techniques such that you'd be hard pushed to find a better tandoori chicken or chicken tikka anywhere in Kathmandu. These are utterly delicious. The derivative dishes like chicken tikka masala are equally good, as are the naan and side dishes.

The restaurant courtyard is at the front of the hotel in its own enclave set back from the madhouse of Thamel centre. The waiters, mostly the same crew year after year, always greet us with a welcome and handshake. That's nice.

It's not the cheapest but I will always recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a reliably good Indian/Nepali meal in a civilized atmosphere.

Only irritation during one of our visits was a live band (ethnic music) who went round the tables trying to flog their CD at a ridiculous price and making you feel guilty if you didn't buy. They should consider adopting the practice of music bars like those in Nashville and Memphis where a bucket is passed round. If you like the band, you throw in some cash. If you really like them, you buy a CD on the way out. I guarantee they would make more money that way - and without annoying the customers.

Dear Paul,
Namaste,

Thank you for your wonderful review about KGH, especially our restaurant. Our restaurant crew are really excited and proud that you loved the food, mainly tandoori. :)

We would also want you to stay at KGH as you mentioned you have never stayed here. We have rooms starting from USD 2.00 to luxury rooms to USD 160.00. With this wide variety of choices I am sure you love your stay here.

Also, thank you much for bringing the issue of the band trying to selling cds at the restaurant. For this we have already spoken to our F and B Manager Mr. Ujjwol and he has instructed the band as not to disturb our guests in that way.

We hope you will be back again and this time not just for the restaurant but to also stay with us. See you soon! :)

I have visited Nepal few times and I have stayed at the Kathmandu guest house 3 times over the past few years. It is an indisputable oasis in the middle of the hectic Thamel and it attracts travelers like a magnet. It has attracted me for sure. The issue I have had upon returning to the hotel from my trekking trip was to be told they had no rooms available. That was very upsetting considering I had double checked before my departure and I had been assured that my return reservations were in good standing. This has happened to me twice. Nothing like getting to the hotel exhausted from an arduous trip and been told "we are sorry there was a mix up with the reservations but we have made arrangements for you to stay at the xyz hotel". There is clearly something wrong with their reservation system.

Dear John,
Namaste,

Thank you for your review and stay with us for all this time. We also want to apologize for the problem you had to face due to the reservation.

It is definitely a shame that the reservation got mixed up and you had to go through a lot of hassle after coming back from tired from the trek.

We are upgrading a lot of system for better service to our guests, and hope in the future you will not face such issues.

Thank you again and hope to see you back again at KGH.
