“Thank you, Nabin and co”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

A super little guesthouse in the heart of Thamel. Staff very helpful, especially Nabin who went out of his way to look after our group. Lovely, quiet garden out the back which gets you away from the chaos. A very chilled out couple of days.

Our initial rooms were garden facing in the southern wing. Nicely revamped ensuite wet room. Power outages impacted on what you could do. Difficult when trying to work. Noisy loud music til late from a restaurant behind and the eternal loud barking dogs so sleeping was a challenge. Moved to a deluxe room on the ground floor of the northern wing. Lovely room, constant power, refrigerator. No more loud music but still dogs but definitely better. Only problem there was a group on very inconsiderate English men sharing the 2 adjoining rooms for a few nights who thought they had the right to keep everyone around them awake while they drank on the balcony til all hours.

Room Tip: You will probably find better value for your money in Thamel with 24 hour power too. Ambience is goo...

Kathmandu Guest House would like thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at our deluxe rooms.

However, we are also sad that you did not have a very good experience due to the disturbance from our other guests and noise outside. We hope you will have better experience on your next visit at KGH.

We arrived here as part of a touring group so I don't know what was paid for our room. I am hoping it was a basic room as although the size was ok and it had a sitting area it was very dated and smelled meldewy. That said we had a kind of veranda which led on to the roof where we could look down to the lovely gardens below. The bathroom also could do with updating but the bed was extremely comfortable and the bed linen clean. Another couple we were travelling with were allocated a suite of rooms consisting of two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, outside corridor and veranda - all very nice indeed. I think if you stay here you very much get what you pay for and it appears to cater for all budgets. The lobby, restaurant and gardens are all lovely.

Had a great stay, on two separate occasions during a week. Stayed in the old part of the hotel the first two nights, and found the room to be mildewy, and the electrical outlets shorted. Not great value.

However, the manager Nabin moved us to the new part of the hotel, and we loved our room. Clean, great showers, TV and amazing views over the garden.

Nabin was such a good host, that he made up for the rocky start. Look for him when you arrive, and get to know him.

The hotel is centrally located in Tamel, and has good and reliable internet.

Room Tip: Stay in the new part of the hotel, not the old. No comparison.

Kathmandu Guest House would like to thank you for your response. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. :)

Our heritage wing has most of our budget rooms for our guests who wants to travel in limited budget. These are separate rooms with common shower and toilets. The are basic in nature.

Whereas, our deluxe rooms in our new wing Siddhi Annex are luxurious A/C rooms with great amenities and breakfast. We also have the mid level rooms like Standard and Garden Facing rooms.

We are also glad you loved our location. Thank you once again and see you soon in the future.

Pragya

I stayed here for several days in March before and after my trek. My "deluxe" room in the new wing was well appointed and up to modern international hotel standards. The backup generator powers everything in this wing instead of just the lights as I have heard is the case in other parts of the hotel, so I did not notice the power cuts at all.

The breakfast buffet was basic but ok, and opens earlier than other eating spots in the area which is handy for early risers and those with early departures. I ate most of my other meals elsewhere, but did try a lunch and dinner there and found the food to be fairly good.

There are comfortable places to relax in the common areas both indoors and out. Free internet is available on the restaurant patio, but I found it too slow to be useful. The prepaid internet on the other hand was reliable and fast by Nepal standards. The listed prices sound expensive until you realize it is for the time you actually use the internet, so the 24 hour package might last an average person a week making it a good value. If you want to save a few rupees anyway, the New Orleans Cafe across the street has good free Wi-Fi if you buy something there.

As other reviewers have noted, there seem to be some issues with their booking system. When I returned from my returned from my trek, it turned out that the room I had been allocated was still occupied by someone else. After some discussion with the representative from the trekking company I was given a different room which a assume intended for someone else. Good for me, but possibly a problem for someone arriving later. This was the only glitch during the stay, otherwise all the hotel staff I dealt with were friendly and helpful. I would be happy to stay at KGH again if I ever go back to Nepal.

Kathmandu Guest House family would like to thank you for your detailed response. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at KGH.

Our buffet breakfast, like you mentioned, is put up early for our guests who leaves for their trek or mountain flights early in the morning and it is up to 11:00 am for our la te risers as well ;).

We also apologize for the hassle you had to go through when you came back after the trip. We will make sure this does not happen again.

Thank you again and hope to see you soon at KGH.

This guest house is iconic, partly because the Beatles stayed there. It's a beautiful old building, with sleeping space ranging from $2 a night, for dorm space with a toilet down the hall, to luxurious suites. I took a room at the $16 point, and was not happy. It was in disrepair, and the noises from the hall were distracting. The location is a mixed blessing -- it's in the heart of Thamel. This is good because it's where the action is. It's also bad because the action becomes very loud in the evening and into the night.
This place shines as a place to eat. The buffet breakfast is served in an open courtyard; lunch and dinner are available in the same place, as well as in another courtyard. The settings are beautiful, and the food is excellent.
My ideal time in Kathmandu was spent staying at a guest house just outside Thamel (the International), and walking to the Kathmandu Guest House for dinner. It's an easy walk.
Another good thing to know about location is that this place is across the street from a grocery store and just a few doors down from an amazing book store.

Room Tip: Go to another guest house unless you are willing to pay a lot of money. It's difficult to assess...
