“A great place to start a visit to Nepal”
Reviewed December 13, 2011

We chose this hotel because we were going to be starting a trek the next day and the Himalayan Encounters office is right outside its courtyard. We were very happy with our large clean room on the second level. Western toilet and hot shower were a plus. Much of the hotel is quite beautiful and you got the feeling KGH is a historic place. And it's smack in the middle of Thamel, but secluded enough to provide an escape when you're ready for it.

Room Tip: Don't let them give you one of the dark and tiny rooms on the ground floor. The upper levels are...

this hotel has several type of rooms inside, so I believe could satisfy many requests. I stayed in a suite with air conditioning. It was a period of black-out in town but my room was still perfectly working. The furniture is old, the bath conditions poor, do you might dislike it but it is Katmandu and I didn't expect anything more. The mood in the hotels is great and you can enjoyn stayin in the outdoor areas.

The hotel is conveniently located and you can reach the main city square on foot in 10 minutes.

Great location but the customer service here is atrocious. They did not have a revervations and claimed we had not confirmed. I had emails to prove otherwise. Regardless, they offered us a nasty place across the street for a discount but this place was definitely not worth the so called discounted $65 per night. Thamel as a location is fabulous, but do yourselves a favor and find a better hotel.

If one is planing to travel to Nepal and stay more than 20 days, of of the days is likely going to be a strike day, the locals call it NEPAL BANDH, which literally means NEPAL CLOSED. If you are tourist stuck in Kathmandu during these days, you better be in Kathmandu Guest House, because they serve perfect meals as the restaurant inside the hotel can stay open as the restaurants outside are closed. The price they charge is very reasonable unlike other places taking advantages of these kinds of situation. No wonder KGH has been here for now nearly 50 years. The garden of KGH is a perfect place to catch up on your readings and writing your journals. Their double gate of KGH gives the sense of security and the security is very strict. GOOD JOB, KGH.

Room Tip: I stayed in a standard room, simple but good enough.

We had stayed at this hotel on previous Nepal trips. The price was reasonable, $30/night. This time the price was $90/night. Beds are narrow and hard. Hot water a bit iffy. We moved to another hotel for $95/ night and the room was far, far better. The value in this place is poor and I suggest trying elsewhere.

the hotel has a great location. The staff was not so friendly, the food was ok, but service was not so good. The cocktails were nice, but not outstanding
the bathroom was clean, but old, towels were old, toilet was very old. But good hot water.
I think it;s overrated. there must be other hotels with the same price which would be better

Room Tip: facing the garden, with private bathroom
