“A little luxury for a cheap price”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Very nice and historical building, with good privat security and nice swimming pool. A little old furniture and breakfast not so clean but very good value for money. We stayed in a suite, a normal room but bigger. It is worth it to stay here if you are looking for a nice and relaxing hotel, but the location is not so good, you must ask for a taxi in the hotel and the main touristic atractions are a little far.

Room Tip: I stayed in a suite for a good price, it is worth it.

What luck to have chosen this hotel. At first glance, it looks old and tired. Let it grow on you. When I say "Oasis" I mean it literally. Having arrived from the Kathmandu airport, I drive through a dusty and dirty city only to enter a compound that seems so far removed from the rest of the city. This is an old manor house that has been transformed into a hotel. Allow me to tell you the positive traits:

1- Staff: helpful, attentive, highly professional. From the bar staff to the front desk, all members were ready to assist. Operator assisting me in connecting outside calls, laundry service personnel, all were great.
2- Room: Clean, cold a/c where I was able to control the temperature. Very important to me. TV - good cable channels to kick back, relax and watch at night.
3- Computer Room: Access to emails - free. I didn't bring with me any electronics, so their use of the computer for emails was great.
4- Pool: used it once, I am sorry to say. Great added bonus and a great way to end the day in the hot summer months.
5- Breakfast: Complete, could not ask for more. Great variety, fruits, etc.
6- Cost: $70 USD per night w/tax.

Would highly recommend to anyone. If I were to return, I would not even look for another option, I would rent at the Shankar again. Thanks for a great 5 nights!

The Shanker Hotel is a very welcome oasis tucked away in the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu.
When you pass through the gates you leave behind the traffic and noise and enter quiet welcoming gardens and a charming converted palace.
The breakfasts, which are included in the rates are outstanding and the staff most obliging and professional.

After three weeks on the road from northwest China to Kathmandu and 5 for my husband and 7 for brother in law - this was a great treat on our 4 x 4 drive from London to Dhaka on our charity drive. If you want to pamper yourself and still pay less than £60 a nite this is the perfect hotel. An oasis in the midst of a very chaotic city with its own gardens and pool, walking distances to Thamel and shopping and close to great restaurants - great old world charm, well maintained, very attentive staff, great bar, great buffet breakfasts - just what we needed and caterers for families, groups and conferences but you are made to feel special - we would definitely go back

Me and my wife Pace Daniela visiting Nepal first time 12 years ago. end June 2013 was the 40 th
anniversary of our marriage and so I decided to come in Katmandu for 8 days of relax visiting the
ancient city of Kathmandu that the last visit was not discovered in all the cultural and ancient aspect. (we had a visit with group and stay only 2 days in Kathmandu after we go in Pokara, rafting with kajak, Park of Chitwan)
For this reason We choose a confortableHotel with swinning.pool , SPA, near the center
town _____________Our choice of Hotel Shanker is so-well made, eccept for SPA (outside of Hotel ) for restaurant (poor Menu) and for internet-point not available for all the visitors (Only free Wi.fi). Also the service international call was not available in room 706.

It is an honour to have hosted you and your wife during your 40th wedding anniversary celebrations.

Thank you so much for your review posted here on tripadvisor.com.

Your positive words regarding our property were very encouraging.

Your comment about the restaurant menu has been duly noted and will be taken up with the F&B manager My apologies for any inconvenience caused with this matter. Regarding internet access, we provide LAN wires in selected rooms only. In sync with technological advancements in modern laptops, tablets and smartphones, we provide free wifi access to all our guests as very few people do not have wifi on their devices. I apologize that this was inconvenient to you.

Our Spa is off site, and we're on the process on bringing in on-site. Hopefully, a visitor to our hotel next year will be able to avail the on-site spa services. As an alternative, we do provide ayurvedic and trekkers massages in the guest room for the convenience of our guests.

Once again, thank you for your review and of course for staying with us. Hope to welcome you back in the near future.

The hotel is in OK location but when u enter the hotel doesn't feel like home and you're paying for stay at all. The waiters in the breakfast feels like they just came there to show their faces and not for the give a good service to the guests. Which can makes you to feel they are not trained well. At least they should know when and how they have to talk and serve with guests. I should say definitely doesn't worth 4 stars at all. I have been lots of 4 and 5 stars hotels but never found uncomfortable situation like this. So better to improve them as much more they can. Would be nice for all the travellers.

The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more   less
