“When in Rome!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

5 Star in Nepal is not quite what you'd expect from 5 star elsewhere but all in all this hotel was very good. Lovely gardens and pool area make you forget you're in the middle of the dustiest, busiest city I've ever been too. The rooms are not amazing but they are very clean, comfy and have excellent showers which is just what you need after a long trek!
Staff are very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was a bit random but the ice creams were fantastic!

Yes, Shanker once belonged to one of the Rana rulers of Nepal with a penchant for European architecture. It is from there that we see the neo classical designs in the building. I am glad that you appreciated all of those.

I am happy to hear that you were satisfied with our rooms and amenities and also that you perceived our staff to be very helpful. I shall definitely share you kind words with team.

Thank you for having taken the time to write down this wonderful account of your experience and I shall look forward to welcome you back to our hotel if you plan a return visit!

My husband and I stayed here 3n. Our first sight was the extensive grounds and pool areas. Immaculately kept and hotel a beautiful old palace with décor to match its era. The rooms were spacious and clean. A bowl of fruit, chocolates and flowers were delivered to our room on arrival.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was great and had a good selection of food at a reasonable price. A good selection of food for breakfast, although the large room could have some ventilation as it got quite hot in there.

Room Tip: if you like to have a separate lounge area ask for a corner unit.

This hotel was hosting the Everest Marathon 2013. I was booked in a suite which had a very large lounge and bedroom. The bath had its own water heater so hot water was instantaneous.

This is a heritage property, good clean rooms, and a pretty garden where a good latte is available.

The location is convenient. I cannot comment on the price as I was booked as a package with the Everest Marathon Event. A great property and excellent service.

It is a matter of pride to host the Everest Marathon group at our hotel.

It gives me great pleasure to know that you appreciated our old world appeal. We have been tenacious in clinging to our roots, and in doing so we do stand apart from other chain hotels with a strong uniqueness of our own.

Thank you for rating our accommodation and service with high scores.

Hope you join the group again next year, and we look forward to welcoming you back again!

I stayed here with a friend for two nights at the beginning of June this year. Within minutes of arriving we were brought a fruit basket, flowers and chocolates. It definitely has an air of luxury with its swimming pool and huge dining hall, but I found it very reasonably priced for what we got. The staff were excellent and very friendly, the room was a decent size and was clean, air-conditioned and had a lovely en-suite. Despite being very close to Thamel and several main roads, the hotel was very quiet, even outside by the pool. This was very welcome after the noise and crowds of Thamel. The breakfast buffet that was included was great, and I have no complaints about our stay all. Definitely recommended.

Stayed here four five nights recently. It's a lovely oasis hidden from the hustle and bustle. Although its in lazimpat and not thamel, it's only a ten minute walk. The pool is lovely and the rooms clean and spacious. It has some of the best food in Kathmandu. I would recommend this. By Kathmandu standards its expensive at $85 but in any other country would be 2 to 3 times the price.

This gave us an option to stay in a heritage property without having to splurge. Rooms were good, service average, the breakfast spread filling.

The best thing about this place was its location which gave us a chance to explore the city.

An oasis of calm in a very busy but fascinating city. The staff were wonderful, good breakfast, and the travel desk (which I think is actually run by another company) arranged a wonderful trip around Nepal.

Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more   less
