I am a frequent traveller to Nepal and always stay in the Shanker. The people are the friendliest imaginable and I feel like one of the family. Rooms, TV, wifi all great and the pool is a beautiful haven in hectic Ksthmandu. This really is a great hotel.

We loved our stay at the Hotel Shanker. The facade of the hotel is beautiful. Rooms were not anything special compared to the architecture of the old palace building, but they were clean and the bathroom had a tub.

We were able to walk to the market at night, but it isn't for the fainthearted! A police officer directing traffic helped us to cross safely. We took a tuk tuk back to the hotel.

Breakfast was served in a beautiful old downstairs banquet hall and we loved the classical music that was playing. Big buffet, lavishly laid out and good coffee.

The pool and the grounds are gracious and we enjoyed sitting by the pool and having a nice lunch. One evening the grounds were decorated and lit up and a wedding reception was being held.

This was the last hotel of our vacation, and I am particularly happy we chose it.

Went to Nepal for the first time. Stayed in the hotel for four days. Found the hotel clean, excellent service and great location. I will recommend this hotel to anyone who is travelling to Nepal. Every room is decorated with nice paintings. Though the room was small but was not suffocating. Restaurant services were ok. Buffet breakfast was fine. Other food preparation could have been better.

I expected this hotel to feel a little more palatial (it is a palace, after all) so I was a little disappointed at first with the overall feel of the interior inclusive of rooms and hallways, but when I step away from the palace fantasy this is a very good hotel, particularly for the price. While you won't be getting the ornate or pristine feel of a palace, you will be getting a very clean room and tons of space. The room had a sitting area and a master bedroom, which was nice. You're also getting a wonderful breakfast spread. The people at the hotel are all very friendly, genuine and helpful - it felt like they were just trying to do a good job for their guests, rather than send you to the travel desk or some other revenue-generating arm of the hotel as can often be the case. That said, their travel desk is super friendly and helped us organize an Everest Flight tour on extremely short notice, which we really appreciated. Best of all, the grounds are clean, secluded and safe - walkable to some of the main markets in town, but set back from the utter chaos of the city. I was a little disappointed they didn't have a fitness facility with treadmills anywhere on the huge grounds, but I suppose a small sacrifice to make for the other comforts. If you're a swimmer the pool area looked beautiful, though too cold outside for me to actually use in December!

This was our second stay in Kathmandu. The Shanker's an old hotel, dark, dank rooms not decorated for years. The Bathroom was aweful, with a huge 'blob' of something stuck in the bathtub - no idea what it was but we stayed well away! Our room was next to a road and, having stayed on a Friday night, the music was loud and went on until 1am (not great when we had a flight back home the following day). The restaurant food was poor, breakfast average. Location was good but the only saving grace. Objectively, this would be 2 star by international standards

Room Tip: go somewhere else!

My first impression as we pulled up to the entrance was that the facade is a little run down....uh ...oh what will the inside be like?
A warm friendly welcome by the bell staff and the front desk. The inside of the lobby was ok, a little old .
The hall to our room was the most interesting hallway I have ever seen. Half round windows at the floor level with plush carpeting and Nepalese photos on the wall above. We were shown to our room (suite)and the staff brought in a fresh fruit tray as well as chocolates.Value for money this room was fantastic and well appointed. I would certainly recommend the Shanker to others that enjoy a little character of an old hotel. The Thamel district is very near by for evening dining and shopping. Do take a taxi for this short distance as there are no streetlights and there is road construction at the moment.

Room Tip: Try the suite $140 USD

Exterior renovations of our facade are going on at present, and we apologize for dusty conditions! I am pleased to hear that you appreciated our neo classical interiors. I hope to welcome you again to Shanker again next year!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more   less
