“Tranquility in Kathmandu”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

I was very happy with our stay at the Yak and Yeti. We asked to change rooms to get a single bed and were given an upgrade to an enormous suite. The bar in the lobby was a very pleasant place to visit with friends and the breakfast buffet was delicious. I appreciated the location, hidden in a garden in the middle of the city. It made for a peaceful and relaxing stay.

Well organized hotel attached to old Palace. Rooms were very comfortable, room service was delicious. Breakfast was very good. Attentive service. Walk to casino. Casino however was very low class, unattractive, dark, and messy. Minimum bet on roulette was 25 cents American. Casino gave free drinks and free cigarettes! Shops just outside the gates of the hotel very inexpensive. Good quality and good bargaining.

Room Tip: rooms facing garden are quieter. Rooms facing business side have noise of generators used by restau...

First off, the hotel was old, but rightfully so as it was an old castle that was redesigned into the hotel. That being said, they could have done MUCH better. The rooms were dull and dark, even for hotel standards in KTM. The buffet was subpar, and we even got a bit of a surprise one night when there was a roach crawling through.

The only reason I am rating the hotel 3 stars is because it is in a pretty good location as it is walking distance from a major street, somewhat close to Thamel, and the because the staff was pretty good. They also had a garden in the back which seemed very nice even though we didnt go out because it seemed like there was always a function taking place. I have been to KTM a few times and would definitely explore other options.

I visited this place in December 2011 with friends while travelling around Nepal. This is definitely the worst hotel I have stayed at and is no where near the 5* hotel it claims to be.

On arrival, it was clear to see our rooms had not been properly cleaned. The hotel staff did not make any effort to change our room or make us feel more welcome. They merely stated we our room would be cleaned the next day.

In addition, I also had hair in my breakfast and I also had to wait twice for 20 minutes to get tea after having asked waiters multiple times to bring the tea. The quality of breakfast is also definitely not 5* star standard. The concierge service is poor. When asking them for good restaurants to go to, they weren't able to provide many suggestions. We then decided to venture ourselves and see what we came across.

When going into the the jacuzzi, we were wearing our swimming trunks and we were shouted at by the staff to remove our clothes and then enter the jacuzzi. They were very rude and impolite and could have been much more friendlier.

Having such a bad experience, we told the hotel manager we were dissatisfied and wanted some sort of refund/compensation. He completely refused to provide a refund or change our room. At one point he started to get quite aggressive. We then decided to change our hotel half way through trip because the experience was so unpleasant!

Avoid this hotel at all cost!

The hotel is outdated and in much need for renovation.

Kathmandu hotels are all pretty lousy, but the Yak & Yeti really took this to a new low. Our room was old (i.e. not updated since the 1970s), dirty, hard bed, paper thin pillows, sky green bathroom with chipped bath, and birds roosted outside the window at night. It got to the point where it just got funny, with my fiance and I both trying to push them off the ledge before we went to bed and trying to stop them flying back! The electricity regularly went off, so it was a case of dashing to the lift and hoping for the best on the way down . The staff were probably the most depressed/depressing people we met on our trip. The only saving grace was an average breakfast.

Objectively this is a 2 star hotel at best - ignore websites that put this at anything above this!

Room Tip: just dont stay here!

Hotel Yak & Yeti is located in Kathmandu, Nepal - not very far from the Tribhuvan Airport. It is about 20-30mins drive depending on the time of the day and the traffic condition.

The hotel is located on Durbar road, walking distance from the Palace. It is little inside from the main street and therefore is calm and quiet.

The hotel has well appointed rooms facing the city on one side and the beatiful garden and swimming pool on the other side.

They have a coffee shop, a bar and restaurant at the lobby level. The adjacent building which used to be the Darbar hall of the king, has another restaurant, a pub and also a casino (which runs 24x7, as I heard).

The local market is just nearby and you could buy cashmere, pashmina and local clothes. The hotel also has shopping arcade, if you are looking for pearls and precious stones.

Do not miss the unidentified foot-mark on one of the rocks, placed at the entrace to the garden/pool area. It was found during the excavation work of the hotel in 1990s.

The breakfast is served from 6:30am onwards and offers good choice. Lunch and dinners are normally buffet style and also has good vegetarian options.

The hotel offers conference and meeting facilities for corporates, if you are looking for. Otherwise, it is also equally good and relaxing for holidays.

They accept Nepalese and Indian currency and of course, international credit cards.

Room Tip: Choose the garden or pool side facing room.

A good hotel in a good location, once you get your bearings. In a town as noisy and polluted as Kathmandu (I was shocked how bad it was) this hotel offer you peace and quiet that is needed after a day exploring. The reception area, restaurant and bar are all fairly pleasant but the rooms are ceetainly in need of a coat of paint and up to date bathroom fittings, saying that the showers were good and always had warm water. The bed was very hard but certainly sorted out the bad back.

In summary, yes its expensive and certainly not 5 star but I would stay there again when looking at what my friends were paying for and what they were getting for the £.

If you book direct with the hotel, they chuck in a free airport transfer, which removes a bit of hassel on arrival.
