“Relax in Kathmandu”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012

Hotel Yak & Yeti is located in Kathmandu, Nepal - not very far from the Tribhuvan Airport. It is about 20-30mins drive depending on the time of the day and the traffic condition.

The hotel is located on Durbar road, walking distance from the Palace. It is little inside from the main street and therefore is calm and quiet.

The hotel has well appointed rooms facing the city on one side and the beatiful garden and swimming pool on the other side.

They have a coffee shop, a bar and restaurant at the lobby level. The adjacent building which used to be the Darbar hall of the king, has another restaurant, a pub and also a casino (which runs 24x7, as I heard).

The local market is just nearby and you could buy cashmere, pashmina and local clothes. The hotel also has shopping arcade, if you are looking for pearls and precious stones.

Do not miss the unidentified foot-mark on one of the rocks, placed at the entrace to the garden/pool area. It was found during the excavation work of the hotel in 1990s.

The breakfast is served from 6:30am onwards and offers good choice. Lunch and dinners are normally buffet style and also has good vegetarian options.

The hotel offers conference and meeting facilities for corporates, if you are looking for. Otherwise, it is also equally good and relaxing for holidays.

They accept Nepalese and Indian currency and of course, international credit cards.

Room Tip: Choose the garden or pool side facing room.

A good hotel in a good location, once you get your bearings. In a town as noisy and polluted as Kathmandu (I was shocked how bad it was) this hotel offer you peace and quiet that is needed after a day exploring. The reception area, restaurant and bar are all fairly pleasant but the rooms are ceetainly in need of a coat of paint and up to date bathroom fittings, saying that the showers were good and always had warm water. The bed was very hard but certainly sorted out the bad back.

In summary, yes its expensive and certainly not 5 star but I would stay there again when looking at what my friends were paying for and what they were getting for the £.

If you book direct with the hotel, they chuck in a free airport transfer, which removes a bit of hassel on arrival.

The Yak and the Yeti was recommended to us by trekkers who were on their walk to Everest Base Camp. Prior to arriving in Kathmandu we didn't stay here, but after the rave reviews of those we kept bumping into on the mountain, we booked in after making it back to Kathmandu.

Well, we were NOT disappointed. The food was amazing and it was great after two weeks of eating mountain food to tuck right into the buffet lunch. Perhaps the best part about this hotel is it is highly professional staff who attend to your every need.

For those of us who have walked almost 200km, the steam, sauna and spa was a gift from heaven. This was simply the cream on the cake for us. If you don't use any other facility in the hotel this one makes up for any deficiencies, as you can soak, relax and recover.

The hotel was clean and quite smart, in appearance. The only problem was the food and service, in the restaurant. Food ordered from the a la carte menu was ok, but certainly not 5 star, may be about 3 star. It was always very, very slow to arrive.
The buffet dinner always looked good and offered a good choice. Unfortunately, the cooked was always cold!! We complained on 2 evenings and were finally offered a 10% reduction in price!! (Hardly generous.)
Even worse, the breakfast buffet which contained well cooked food, was also very cold.
The restaurant manager was not interested in the complaints of our party and so I would not recommend this hotel.

I was a little wary of staying here given the reviews, but a travel agent arranged a good deal. Much better than the price for the Hyatt so moved to this hotel. It has a great location - right in the heart of Thamel where you can step out for shopping, coffee, food, bars etc.

The hotel is a little tired looking. The rooms have pigeons roosting on the window sills - the Hyatt has installed the pigeon detracting needles so they do not roost. Not so at this hotel. I was able to sleep fine since I always use earplugs, although I suspect some guests might hear the pigeons cooing since they are right outside the window.

There is no ability to control temperature inside your room - I complained of the room being a bit hot and was promptly offered a fan which I used. It worked great and I was happy.

Service was good - the breakfast buffet had good choices although not quite as sumptuous as the Hyatt.

The number of towels and amenities provided in the bathroom was a bit stingy - just one hand towel and no lotion. The Hyatt provides toothpaste and a little shaving kit as well. Here no such nice touches!

Still a good stay.

I had the good fortune to visit Katmandu again for the first time since 2002 and it and the Yak and Yeti were all the I remember and more .....

The roads are in worse repair, the traffic is terrible but what a place ....

I stayed in the Yak and Yeti last time I was in Katmandu and remember it fondly but on the way from the airport to the hotel I started to wonder if I was working on memories and not reality ..... on steeping in the front door I know it was reality.

Excellent service from the Doorman to the Laundry Boy ...... The rooms were great, warm, inviting and well provisioned, staff polished and professional ..... simply great. Restaurant was also good.

I ventured to the Bar and found the best thing possible ....single malt whisky at prices less than top line Gin and Vodka ...... I could have sat in the bar all night every night and enjoyed ..... this was another great memory ... lets hope the prices stay this way as it is an incredible bonus!

Room Tip: All rooms are great - but the best rooms are in the old wing .... Ask for a Brick Room and they will...

We stayed in this hotel during a recent visit to Nepal. The rooms are comfortable if a little jaded. The carpet on my room was not clean. The Internet is chargeable, with added tax it works out at around £10 for 24 hours which, considering it was free in every other hotel we visited, is excessive. The very worst part of our stay was the service and food in the dining room. The dining staff discourage you from ordering from the menu, suggesting you have the buffet instead. However the buffet was stone cold both for dinner and for breakfast the following morning. The next evening we decided to avoid the buffet and ordered from the menu instead, however we waited almost an hour after ordering before our food arrived. If you are looking for an hotel where you can relax with a good meal after a day's sightseeing in Kayhmandu then avoid this one. I would certainly never stay there again nor would I recommend it.
