I just got back from a 2.5 week trip to Nepal hiking to Everest base camp and while i was there, we stayed at both the Yak and Yeti and also the Shanker. Personally i would choose the Shanker over the Yak and Yeti. The rooms at the Shanker are modern, huge and updated.

Yak and Yeti: The hotel lobby is beautiful and very open. The buffet breakfast lunch and dinner were all fantastic - nice variety of local and western food. The shops were very nice and the grounds were beautiful. The rooms are VERY old and outdated. I was shocked that this "five star" hotel had such outdated rooms. Bathrooms had old cracked tile. The rooms themselves had dirty dingy carpet and just didnt feel very "clean". But the open lobby and fabulous restaurants made up for it.

We decided to check in to this 'five star' hotel after a three week trek through Nepal. After sleeping on plywood and 1/4 inch thick mattresses for three weeks, this was a welcome rest stop. The good: amazing beds and sheets, especially after a trek. Breakfast buffet was excellent for Nepalese standards. The staff was very helpful and accommodating and provided us with a late check-out.
The bad: The rooms are dated. They need a bit of a touch-up. They delivered an iron and ironing board to our room and the iron board pad was disgusting. The phone in our room was also very filthy. The bathroom condiments could be nicer. Just picking a few things that could be improved on.
The Awesome: I had to rebook a flight to China and tried for three hours on my own via every website available and got nowhere. I called down to the travel/business centre and Priyanka delivered me a ticket for the date I wanted within 20 minutes. I was blown away! She was so helpful and quick. Had to mention her here as she was so professional and accommodating. Thanks Yak and Yeti for a wonderful stay.
Tip: Eat the lamb chops at the Chimney Restaurant....so yummy after Dhal Bhat for 3 weeks!

This hotel is within walking distance of the old palace and Thamel District. It was built during extravagant years in Nepal with beautiful gardens.

The staff is excellent! With three resturants and a nice lobby bar, it is wonderful oasis in a busy city.

Request a room overlooking the gardens!

I enjoyed staying here. The lobby in the mornings has a buzz about it as intrepid explorers rustle about in their technical kit as they come and go from various expeditions. And breakfast is good - a very large help yourself buffet that makes it all to easy to eat too much. We found the staff to very helpful and friendly, giving us the feeling that nothing was too much trouble. We had a room in the 'refurbished' end of the hotel. It was spacious but tired looking as is the entire hotel (though I noticed they are renewing the rooms in the 'old' end of the hotel). The hotel garden was pleasant, the bar was always open and the location is ideal for exploring the city. The only real blot was that the Wifi (which you have to pay for) kept disappearing and the reception wasn't very good anyway.

Room Tip: I would avoid rooms in the old part of the hotel until they have finished the refurbishment work.

Great environment to spend the time in Kathmandu. Offers enough space to relax and privacy. Probably the best hotel in town. Has kept its historic appeal. Offers all the basics a five star hotel should offer.

An oasis in a chaotic city with tranquillity and lovely grounds. The buffet for all meals was very good and all the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The common parts are a bit drab and tired as are the rooms, If you chose a room with a garden view beware of the pigeons they sit on your window ledge and coo and poo from about 5.

Needs some anti pigeon treatment on all the rooms

Great location

We decided to stay here one night after staying in some rough hotels in Kathmandu which were arranged as part of trekking tours. It is expensive however we felt it was worth every penny. I booked online through their website and got a discount from the usual price per night and it included transfers. When we checked in we were told we had been upgraded - i had asked for a room with a garden view after reading reviews on trip advisor. The room was lovely and the beds and pillows were absolutely wonderful. Trekkers will understand how much difficult this is to find in Nepal. The TV was good, bathroom very nice, nice furniture etc.

On the downside and why i give the hotel only 4 stars: wifi is not free which is quite ridiculous given that almost every other hotel/guesthouse/cafe in thamel offers it. It is over 900 rupees for 24hr access - daylight robbery and when people are spending $200 on a room its a bit cheeky. There are computers to use at 10 rupees a minute and dont even think about printing off things without reading the prices first. The bar lacks atmosphere which is a shame. The beer is 3 times the price from most places in Thamel which is fair enough given its top end hotel but when the bar isnt nice in the first place it feels a bit much. To be fair, you do get nibbles with it. Also, during the numerous daily power cuts this is the only building where we saw all electricity cut out for the few seconds before the backup generators kicked in. For most other places you barely notice it except for the lights getting dimmer. Here, the entire hotel goes dark.

If we return to Kathmandu we will definitely stay at the Yak and Yeti, however, I would hope that they would sort out their internet charges before then as its a real draw back.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden facing room - seemed to do the trick for us.
