“Yak & Yeti”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

An oasis in a chaotic city with tranquillity and lovely grounds. The buffet for all meals was very good and all the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The common parts are a bit drab and tired as are the rooms, If you chose a room with a garden view beware of the pigeons they sit on your window ledge and coo and poo from about 5.

Needs some anti pigeon treatment on all the rooms

We decided to stay here one night after staying in some rough hotels in Kathmandu which were arranged as part of trekking tours. It is expensive however we felt it was worth every penny. I booked online through their website and got a discount from the usual price per night and it included transfers. When we checked in we were told we had been upgraded - i had asked for a room with a garden view after reading reviews on trip advisor. The room was lovely and the beds and pillows were absolutely wonderful. Trekkers will understand how much difficult this is to find in Nepal. The TV was good, bathroom very nice, nice furniture etc.

On the downside and why i give the hotel only 4 stars: wifi is not free which is quite ridiculous given that almost every other hotel/guesthouse/cafe in thamel offers it. It is over 900 rupees for 24hr access - daylight robbery and when people are spending $200 on a room its a bit cheeky. There are computers to use at 10 rupees a minute and dont even think about printing off things without reading the prices first. The bar lacks atmosphere which is a shame. The beer is 3 times the price from most places in Thamel which is fair enough given its top end hotel but when the bar isnt nice in the first place it feels a bit much. To be fair, you do get nibbles with it. Also, during the numerous daily power cuts this is the only building where we saw all electricity cut out for the few seconds before the backup generators kicked in. For most other places you barely notice it except for the lights getting dimmer. Here, the entire hotel goes dark.

If we return to Kathmandu we will definitely stay at the Yak and Yeti, however, I would hope that they would sort out their internet charges before then as its a real draw back.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden facing room - seemed to do the trick for us.

Spent one night here at this great oasis enroute to Chitwan. Clean rooms, great view and warm staff. The lobby is always crowded with the checkins or checkouts so getting the attention of the reception may be a little challange. The 24 hr coffee shop had a great breakfast but was kind of too packed. avoid sitting near the windows unless u like the hot sun beating down your neck. all in all a great stay. a heavy tea with some great starters ... :) sure helped us get a taste of what was to lie ahead. A rather good Hors d' oeuvres for those who would like to have a lesisure evening. The regular rooms do not have a safe so it meant us being extra careful with our important stuff. The delux room where we stayed in on our return had a safe so was much better.
it sure is a great place to stay esp on your first trip to this heavenly valley.

Room Tip: See if you can get a garden facing room ... it sure is a lovely sight while waking up in the morning...

The Yak & Yeti is great for travelers (especially if its your first visit to Kathmandu). It is very easy to arrange everything you need through them whether it be airport shuttle, car service, sightseeing, etc. The car service through the hotel is disproportionately expensive for what it would cost you to hire a taxi but you at least get some assurance and have no troubles with communication. There are a few restaurants on the property and all were fine. I enjoyed sitting outside (the outside area near the pool is beautiful) with a cocktail to relax, and I tried the Nepali restaurant which was a fun experience. The only minor inconvenience was that it was not yet financially attached to the hotel (even though its located in the hotel) so you couldn't charge it to your room. I had such a short stay (it was a business trip) that I didn't get to fully enjoy everything, but I will say that everything I needed was available at the hotel and the room was very comfortable. Service was very warm and welcoming in every area.

Very happy with service and accommodation. Not central to the shops but very pretty spot. Breakfast good and service on tables good. The curtains are looking tired in the rooms and locks on room hard to use, but everything else ok. Great experience compared to other hotels, enjoyed a Nepalese restaurant close by.

Even if I haven't tried any other hotels in Kathmandu, Yak and Yeti did the job for us. Far enough from the main road to be very quiet but still very close to restaurants and shops. Room was fine and service impeccable. Internet is not free. About 12$USD a day. You can get free wi-fi any any restaurants or coffee shop in KTM so we used the money instead to get a great coffee at Himalayan Java while surfing the web. That hotel has a pool and a beautiful garden to relax. Basically nothing bad to say.

Yak and Yeti is one of the old 5 stars in Kathmandu and is located bang in the center of Kathmandu on Darbar Marg. The area has lot of nice restaurants and hotels and very close to the King's palace.

Y&Y has retained its old world charm, and while some new sections have spoilt the look a bit, it still makes you go back to the 70's and 80's.

The Hotel has a beautiful lawn ( make sure your room faces the lawn) and a morning/evening cup of tea and snacks on the lawn is a very nice experience.

The rooms are decently maintained. But the entire hotel has a bit worn-out look .

On the whole, a good experience in a decent 5 star hotel with a old world charm in a great location.

Room Tip: It should be a lawn facing room.
