“Charming hotel in busy Kathmandu”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

Great hospitality by staffs, good breakfast buffet spread and good taxi service by hotel. Room packages were attractive and rooms in the new wing has great garden views. Hope furnishing and toilet wd be refurbished with a bit more modern look in near future as current setup is okay but a bit outdated. Nevertheless, this hotel has great staffs that cares and treats guests feeling like home. Thumbs up for Crowne Plaza Soaltee.

Room Tip: Room at new wing facing garden has great views. Get room with breakfast included worth it.

*We have stayed here before and the service continues to be a disappointment.

*I was upgraded from a normal room to a deluxe room being a priority club member. The deluxe room had a smell of dampness and also the false ceiling had some water leaking. I brought this to the attention of the hotel representative.

*The buffet breakfast and lunch that we availed was good and had a tempting variety.

*The speciality restaurants like Al Fresco made the dining experience memorable.

*It was too cold to swim so we were unable to use the pool.

*The comfortable sitting area at the porch of the hotel is a great experience and also has a bar set up in the evenings.

*The hotel is located close to the market and attractions which is nice.

*A couple of things that were a matter of concern:
- Most airline crew stay here and so there is perpetually a whole lot of uniformed people checking in and checking out every few hours which keeps the lobby and bar area very crowded.

-The gym is in a small room which gives you a stuffy feeling with no windows etc and old equipment.

-The bathrooms get wet easily as the partition between the shower area and the rest of the bathroom isn't very effective to keep the water at bay.

-When we stayed the Casino was non-operational.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, opt for the club rooms. They are much better than the standard rooms.

I am sorry I disagree with the views of Bbmayumi and Sam S. I dont think a hotel can do much about its location. When the hotel came up a few decades ago as the Soaltee Oberoi the out-of- town location was considered an advantage. But since then traffic in Kathmandu has become so horrendous that getting to the Soaltee can be trying.
The hotel is being refurbished and visitors should be aware that the rooms in the new wing are very good and worlds class. So asked for a new wing room and get a beautiful view of the mountains.
We found the service very good and the lobby managers extremely helpful. They pointed us to some of the best restaurants we ate in in Kathmandu and also suggested a visit to the Garden of Dreams which turned out to be heavenly.
The comment about the lobby and lounge area is accurate. The hotel needs to do do something about the lounge and what passes for a bar.
All in all we found Soaltee Crowne Plaza a more than decent place to stay and what set it apart was the helpful advice and approach of the reception and lobby staff

Room Tip: As for a garden facing room in the new wing

in the developed world it would be 2.5, only because the rooms are so ugly and out of date.

service is good though a bit over-bearing

the Club Lounge is a sad affair

grounds are beautiful but location is useless, far from center

quite decent breakfast + internet

Room Tip: careful they do not put you in a room with a high number, some rooms are a trek from the reception

Dear Sam S,

Greetings from Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Kathmandu !

Thank you very much for taking your valuable time to post your comment on TripAdvisor regarding your visit to our hotel.
We have taken note of your comments that you found the room assigned to you was not satisfactory as you found it outdated. Whilst we continue to receive generally very positive feedback from our guest about our product and services, it is very unfortunate that on this incident, we have failed to meet your expectation. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.
We have also noted your feedback on the location of the hotel and agree that it is a little away from the city. On the contrary there is an easy access to "Swoyambhunath" (Monkey Temple), other "World Heritage" sites and the main city via taxis and the location does offer the hotel a calm and serene atmosphere.
At the mean time we are delighted to know that you liked our service and enjoyed breakfast.

The team at the Soaltee Crowne Plaza Kathmandu looks forward to providing you with a much better experience with upgraded room category on your next visit.

We stayed in this hotel during our holiday in Nepal. Its supposedly a 5 star property, but having been to lots of 5 star hotels in India, this seemed like a 4 star to me (inspite of being upgraded to a Club room).
*The best part is the breakfast which is very lavish and includes Indian, continental and arabian dishes. This is something to be enjoyed in leisure.
*Apart from this, the hotel has a pretty decent gym and an excellent spa. The masseurs are pretty well trained and the massage service is very good.
*The landscaping is done very well and the property looks very beautiful.
*There is also a casino inside the hotel premises. The thing which surprised me was that there was a notice on the room table saying that the guests can visit the casino at their own risk and hotel management will not be responsible in any way. Inspite of this we visited the casino. It was in very bad shape with half the slot machines not working, only roulette being played and the whole place smelt damp. It was quite a disappointing experience.

The good parts of the stay were the polite hotel staff..always smiling and willing to help, the excellent room service and the excellent gym and spa.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the pool or the lawns. We got a room facing the backside of the property w...

Hotel located within a gated complex containing two wings (Princep and Himalayan). Also contains an outdoor pool, fitness centre, barber shop, restaurants, a conference centre and several shops (inside hotel and near complex entrance) selling local crafts.

Myself and a friend stayed in a twin room on three separate occasions (4 nights in total, 3 different rooms-459, 470, 472), as we used as Kathmandu as a hub to Chitwan National Park, Pokhara and Nagarkot.

Pros:
Premises clean, well-maintained (including immaculate gardens) and fitted to a high standard throughout.
Welcome drink on arrival in 'Rodi Bar'.
Security guards at gate check all vehicles before entering. There are also staff at the hotel door.
Two fast lifts in each wing.
Keycard access to room. All 3 rooms contained: two-door storage cupboard with hanging space, safe, iron/ironing board, torch, twin comfortable beds with shared bedside table, phone, clock radio, twin bedside lamps, 2x complimentary  mineral waters each day, chair & table, hotel stationery, Directory of Services, Samsung multi-channel TV (includes hotel information channel, BBC World News, CNN, NDTV, Star Sports, Star Movies and VH1). 2x two-drawer tables/suitcase stand. Tea/coffee facilities. Spacious recently refurnished en suite bathroom fitted with sink, bath/shower & toilet, large mirror, shaving mirror, soap, lotions, toothpaste, 2 glasses. Effective and quiet wall-mounted air-con. Of the 3 rooms only 472 did not have an adjoining door. 472 also included a sofa.

Buffet breakfast served near reception in 'Garden Terrace'. Hot & cold drink & food available  includes juices, water, cereals, bread/toaster, jams, fruit, hot food. Tea & coffee served by waiter/waitress.

Fitness centre includes wall-mounted TVs, treadmills, cycle machines, dumbbells, mats and a bench. Take a bottle to fillup from the water machine. Towels provided.

Cons:
WiFi chargeable (per 24 hours).

Tip: Register for a free 'Priority Club Rewards Member' card - www.priorityclub.com - and you'll receive a complimentary cookies in your room on arrival, a daily newspaper and an extended checkout to 14:00.
Tip: A taxi picked up outside the complex gates (negotiate the price BEFORE getting into the vehicle) is cheaper than a taxi picked up inside the complex via the Concierge.
