“Great location, helpful staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013

PROS:
The location was very good - close to shops, restaurants in Thamel, 10-15 mins walking to the Durbar Square. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful, they booked Everest flight for us (it was late in the evening) and ordered taxi to the airport (500 npr). They also changed our room for a more quiet one. Good sleep quality in rooms facing the street/stupa. Very good breakfast - you can order standard eggs with toasts, jam and butter or something more traditional. Breakfast is served on the roof top. They have their own power generator so you can use warm shower almost 24/7 and there is a weak light also 24/7.

CONS:
It was extremely cold inside the hotel and also our rooms were very cold. You could warm it a bit when the electricity was on using the A/C warming mode. I think they should provide some gas heaters in winter that could work even during power cuts! There was absolutely no room service (we stayed 4 nights and they even didn't empty our trash bin), when we asked for fresh towels (it was too cold for them to dry!) they gave us towels from some empty room... It was very cold in the morning on the roof top so eating breakfast was almost like a kriotherapy ;) Rooms facing the backyard are very loud at night because of some night club!

All in all, I would recommend this hotel to all budget travelers. Value for money factor was unbeatable and warm shower (not 'hot' though) even during power cuts was something nice.

Room Tip: Take a room facing the street/stupa, not the backyard!

This hotel is located in the heart of Thamel which is very convenient for shopping. I was referred to this hotel by the sister hotel Hotel Family Home Pokhara. Both hotels are with good service for sightseeing arrangement. The managers Mr. Mukti (Annex 1) and Mr. Arjun (in pokhara) are friendly and helpful. I was happy with the hotel there.

I have stayed there on December 25th, it is nothing like what is illustrated in the internet. I was extremely disappointed. They seem to have two different hotels owned by the same person, I was moved from one hotel to the other with out any notice. Due to the fact I was arriving very late and leaving very early, I had to accept it. The room is smelly and there was a rat in the other room. I wouldnt recommend it at all.

Took us ages to find this place as it was hidden in between many buildings in the center of the Jyatha area in Thamel. It's only accessible via small lanes that meander into a complex, of which the hotel occupies the top floors. Unfortunately, it's not so safe for single female travelers as the lane becomes a hang out of youths at night who frequent the dodgy dance clubs next door. Service was not so attentive the first day I was there and the receptionist was cold and rude! Guess she must have been in a bad mood as she seemed more cheery the next couple of days! Great clean, large room - very new furniture and fixtures so that's a huge plus. Don't take the rooms next to the dance clubs otherwise you're in for a very rude shock! It gets extremely noisy at night, all that pelting dance music can drive anyone up the wall - just when you think it isn't noisy enough, the people in the club raise the volume so loud it's impossible to hear yourself think! Mind you, I was staying on the 8th floor and it was so loud the windows were vibrating!

Other than that, I had a pretty good stay here - breakfast was amazing and you can order as much as you want. While you're at it, do try the Poori with potatoes - simply yummy! Service was somewhat alright (other than the incident mentioned above). Location wise - quite central, everything's a short walk away. Ohhh do give the Green Tara Spa a try (lobby level) - it's run by a sweet Russian lady and they've got amazing massages! Hungry at nite? pop over to Izakaya Japanese cafe downstairs - the food is YUMMMMY and very affordable!

Room Tip: ask for the rooms that are NOT near the dance clubs, above the main entrance of the building.

Dear Guest, Namaste and warm regards from family home team,
Thank you very much for your time to write the review on tripadvisor, very nice to hear that you had enjoyed your stay with us ,like breakfast/room quality/food/spa and all was good
But I am really sorry to hear about few things which did not make your saty fantastic like the girl in the reception which I already told not to do such a behave for the next gust even she /have the bad mood and sorry about the dance bar in thamel area which is normal
And I do not think that it is not safe for the single female traveler, you know the traffic in Kathmandu everywhere they drive carzy and our hotel is not at the main street shold be more safe then the other hotel, still we have he security guard for the night who is always moving around and looking after our guest in the street and none of our guest had trouble on the past ,we had 100 of single girl stayed in the hotel none of them had the trouble, so that I am confidante with my guest safety and security
Anyway thank you so much for your time and the review ,I really hope to see you again in our home ,Mukti and family home team

Really I would rate this hotel 4.5 stars...

This is a nice and economical spot in the heart of Thamel. The rooms are clean and have many of the modern touches one might expect...

Hot showers, wi-fi in most rooms, comfortable beds, clean rooms, pleasant staff, wonderful and filling included breakfast and a great manager (I believe also owner) who understands what his guests expect and strives to ensure each guest is happy with their stay.

Specifically for me, I arrived in Kathmandu without much of a plan other than knowing I wanted to do a ten day trek somewhere. Upon arrival I spoke with Mukti the manager who talked me through some options of things I could do during my stay. He set up the entire 16 days for me including a flight around Everest, parasailing, flights to/from Pokhara and a 10 day trek to Annapurna basecamp including guide and porter.

I had more money than time, so for me personally, I appreciated someone taking care of all of the details. WIth that said, I found the rates for everything to be very reasonable. I even had end my 10 day trek in 8 days due to illness and I returned to Kathmandu early and he provided me with accommodation at his nice hotel in exchange for the days I could not trek.

Overall, very good experience. One note, there is a lot of noise in Thamel, not just near this property, but through the district. My guess is that this is an issue anywhere you might stay in this area due to dance clubs, honking, dogs barking... the list goes on. This is Thamel and its the tradeoff to stay in the heart of a fun and vibrant district. I rate at 4.5 stars only because the state of the windows could actually have been constructed better to prevent some of the noise, but... it's Kathmandu it comes with the territory.

Overall, if you're up for Thamel and you probably should be, this is a great place to stay!

Room Tip: Stay away from top floor (9th) as it has no wifi and is directly next to the kitchen area which is n...

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Family Home!...Friendly staff and excellent location in the middle of Thamel district. This hotel did NOT disappoint! and the room is clean and spacious. We were very pleased with the friendly and helpful staff...I would recommend it to anyone interested in travelling to Kathmandu...We did all our travel arrangements through tour staff at the hotel...they took care of everything. To be honest...it felt like a home away from home.

btw, great view from the rooftop terrace (nice brekky and good coffee).

When you stay in such small hotel you would expect a warm and intimate service. Unfortunately you may not get it here. Let me start with some good points of the hotel.

Pros
- Well located in Thamel.
- Rooms are new and clean.
- Free airport pickup.

Cons
- Street and neighbor noises during the night. Light sleeper be aware.
- The water from the shower is very small. I had to use the tab for hair wash.
- Breakfast starts from 7am with no packed food choice for those leaving early. This purposely saves the breakfast on those leaving on 7am bus.
- I booked the hotel through a website indicating 'pay at the hotel'. However my credit card was charged for the full amount even before I arrived. Why the hotel is so eager to collect the money? It is not a fault but definitely nor a good service.
- I bought my bus tickets from the hotel and was offered a free drop-off to the bus station. When I collected the ticket I was asked to pay for the ride. I insisted on the free offer and the reception agreed to arrange the service next morning. However the next morning I was asked again to pay the taxi by the same person. Although the drop-off was provided free finally, and I know this is extra service, it only gives the impression that the hotel does not stand on its promised service and is too keen on earning money.

The hotel is not cheap to Nepal's standard and I believe you can find better choice in Kathmandu.

Dear Eternalblue,
Namaste and so sorry for the experience you got with my hotel services,I remember that your stay with us and actually I booked your bus ticket and premise you to drop you to the bus station next morning and I told my reception do fallow now I am really surprise with your review /and seems he didn’t gave you the proper service /I am taking the attention of those comment which you have mention on the review
And I am really sorry for the breakfast ,normally its not a problem for me to provide the breakfast before 7 am but as you know we service the breakfast on the roof terrace and when we start it early the sounds goes to the rooms and people who are sleeping they would not be happy so that I just put the sign in my web that the breakfast is not provide before 7.30 still in special request have told the staff to start is at 7 am and I hope you have seen this big sign on my web page before you booked the room with us but from now I will defiantly provide the packing breakfast for the future guest who will be leaving early morning ,and sorry about noise you have in the night if you want to sleep in the thamel all the hotels have bit of noise during the night that’s I can not solve by myself
Anyway there are 10000 of hotels in thamel for sure lot better then family home but as you said the guest should fell its real family home for the price you are paying but this time I am really sorry that you did not meet your expectation which made me to improve the better management ,I would like to premise my future guest that I would not make a such a mistake again
At the end thank you so much for your comment on the tripadvisor you drop and thank you very much for your valuable time to wrote it all, it’s my pleasure to read this review and look after my guest carefully in the future
I really hope to see you again in my home to treat you well
