“Clean place, friendly staff, sweet location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

We stayed at Sparkling Turtle for almost two weeks. We had originally planned on only stay a few days but we liked it so much we stayed longer rather than moving to another hostel. The staff at Sparkling Turtle is very laid back, friendly, available, and eager to help you out. They don't nag you about payment (you can tab everything up at the very end if you want) and they make the most excellent breakfast in the mornings (included!). The burgers and Dalbat were also simply amazing, props to Mote and the rest of the kitchen staff. Raj and Oneal were also awesome guys, they helped our group out with directions (writing them down on cards for us), gave us tips on taxi prices and other things to get around the city. They were very accommodating with opening the gate at night if we came back late and were very responsive to any need we had. I highly recommend this place, it's within walking distance to the Swayambuht monkey temple and the ring road so you can get around to any place with a bus or taxi for very cheap. Definitely recommend getting as much food from their bar as possible. The internet was also very fast and this place has power generators so there was always some electricity
great place, really glad we chose it

Nepal was one of our favourite places that we visited; the people are wonderful, the views are spectacular and I live for mo-mo's. But this place was just amazing. The one person who we have to thank for everything is O'Niel - he spoke excellent English and made us feel very welcome by showing us around the place, introducing us to other people at the hostel and gave us a warming 'welcome home' as he left us in the room. He was very relaxed and put our needs first before anything. We left our things at the hostel as we went trekking, on our return we were in a rush to get to the airport so he got our bags, called us a cab for a great price, made tea (which was on him) and scrambled eggs on toast aswell as a cheese toastie to go! He was just wonderful.

Rooms were clean and pleasant and the food was always lovely.
Great place to meet other travellers as you share the room and sit around the dinner table with them.
It's about 40 minutes away from the airport so maybe try and pre book a taxi with the hotel as we failed to.
Free wifi isn't brilliant but neither is most of the technology and connection in Nepal.

Careful about dogs getting into your room though! Keep the door closed. That would be my only fault..on our part to be honest.

Definitely would stay here again.

This place became my home away from home during my stay in Kathmand. It had the right vibe as soon as I walked in. Great place to meet same minded people and run by some great people. The blackouts add to the cozyness. It is a little away from thamel, but a nice walk to wake up with in the morning. Definitly a place I will go back to when I visit KTM and Nepal again. And I will....

Room Tip: Just throw your bag on a bed and enjoy the fun upstairs. Bring earplugs for the dogs at night

Stayed at the Turtle for 3 nights on solo trip. Really good spot for single travellers to meet up - sociable vibe and friendly staff. Ensuite bedroom large enough to swing a hundred cats. Free breakfast and tea/coffee an unexpected bonus. Location is nice - long drive from the airport, but close to Monkey Temple and short, cheap cab ride from Thamel. Free wifi.

Could have been a bit cleaner but think this is being/has been worked on. Hot water also a bit erratic. Lots of dogs barking at night (as with everywhere in Kathmandu). However, overall a very good backpackers. Agree with review below which says it has huge potential. Recommended.

Room Tip: The ensuite bedroom is worth the extra unless you are on a very tight budget.

The sparkling turtle is a great hostel to make new friends and meet some really nice people. The electricity goes out every night so there are times when you are sitting eating dinner with a candle and all the neighbours around have a generator and are watching the latest cable tv. This could easily be overcome by purchasing a generator. The food is good however the menu is only buffalo burgers. Showers are cold, beds are quite comfortable and the common area is great to relax and chat with other travellers. The Canadian owner with a Nepalese name tries his best to run the place but i think he needs some backup help and a better tab system rather than the old book he uses. Some things don't get written down and in the end it can become a pain. It is located about a 30-40 minute walk from the Thamel area and close to the monkey temple in a quiet area. Worth it to meet some great people. Prices start about 350rs

Myself and 3 other girlfriends stayed at the Sparkling Turtle back in November. We arrived at the Sparkling Turtle to be warmly greeted by the staff, then we ventured up the stairs to the common area to meet all of the other travelers and the staff all conversing. We had the opportunity to wake up at sunrise the following morning and sat up on the roof for it which was spectacular.
I think the forte is the beautiful people that work at this place. They are some of the most friendly people I have encountered on my trip through Southeast Asia. They host lots of fun activities to get everyone socializing. It's clear that the staff pour their heart and soul into this place. We stayed at the Sparkling Turtle prior to our poon hill trek and they were more than happy to hold our bags for us. It was so great to return to the hostel and be so welcomed. It really felt like a home away from home.
Also, the food is wonderful. Breakfast was great, coffee was tasty. You have to try the paneer burger we all loved it.
It was away from Thamel which is actually pretty great. The walk alone to Thamel is a beautiful walk, and it's nice to be nestled into some culture rather than be surrounded by loud partying.
Take my word for it this place is a must stay!!!

The Sparkling Turtle has so much potential to be a really fantastic hostel...a great building, spacious rooms, fabulous communal spaces for sharing stories with fellow travellers etc..but under delivers in terms of atmosphere and bites with a hidden tax of 13% upon departure.
The extensive burger menu is a really great idea (yet pricey for the budgeting traveller), but there is no other menu covering simple things like tea/coffee/cold drinks/lunch items, which makes keeping top of expenses a challenge. The kitchen staff are utterly beautiful, very kind and accommodating, and the kitchen itself was sparklingly clean and screamed of brilliant organisation :)
One cannot help but feel like there is a slight rift between management at times, which creates an odd vibe. Though, the beds are comfy and the decor colourful.
