Quite simply, you can find better rooms for cheaper elsewhere. They have no generator, so you are often left in the dark. No hot water whatsoever, so if you plan on showering during your stay in Kathmandu, I suggest looking elsewhere.

The staff is incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is great. The staff are also a bit flaky and forgetful.

If you are looking for a great environment outside of Thamel and you don't care about the above concerns, I would recommend it!

A little way out of Thamel (only 30mins walk or 5 mins in the taxi). Has a lovely terrace, great breakfast and the hostel is clean. The beds are a bit uncomfortable if you are staying several nights and there are no generators so once the power is off, there is no light (you'll need to carry your torch with you). I was there in December and it was very very cold. There was no hot water. I think the 4 bed dorms (which are separate rooms) are best, a little warmer and quieter. The cafe, Nips down the road has some great food as does the hostel itself. The staff are very friendly and there is a lot to explore around the hostel.

There arent that many reviews of this hostel, so i was a little bit worried at first. However, the hostel proved to be great. The staff are nice, the hostel is clean. The location is far away from the tourist ghetto, but it is a nice area of kathmandu, far away from the noise and the fuss of central kathmandu. The only complain I have is that there is no hot shower. The water is freezing cold. However, for the price that you pay and for what you get, you really cant ask for much. Breakfast is awesome! (try the omelette with potatoes). The five bed dorms dont have real walls and doors, so it can get noisy if other travelers went drinking and are wasted by the time the come back (bring earplugs)

If you want to get out of the huzzle and buzzle of Kathmandu centre (but still be close to it), if you want to breathe fresh air again, enjoy international cuisine at uneblieveable high level, talk to wonderful peaceful people, sleep in the cleanest rooms all over Nepal, look from your room directly to monkey temple, and be close to chanting monks in buddhist temples,... this is the place :) I am sure, you will love this place :) Have a wonderful time there.

Nepal was one of our last stops on our trip, and we didn't have high expectations for hostels after reading reviews for the ones in Kathmandu. We took a chance on the Sparkling Turtle, seeing as there were no reviews on the hostel at the time. We were not disappointed, not one bit! If you get a chance to have a meal made by Mote, who was trained by Shalena, a 4-star chef, they are amazing, and we are still thinking about how delicious and unique they were!

They also offer tour packages through a partner company, Omega Treks. We used them to plan a trip that included white-water rafting, a short trek in the Annapurnas, and a visit to Chitwan, all in less than 10 days. It was great, very affordable, and we enjoyed our guide and the accomodation was acceptable for backpacking.

As for the hostel location, staying out of the center of the city is definitely a HUGE plus. Anyone who's visited Kathmandu, or any other Asian city for that matter, knows that staying out of the tourist district is a good idea. The Sparkling Turtle is near Monkey Temple, so you're not more than a 200 Rupee cab ride from the shops (US$3).

I know what A'Nak'La, Pari, and Shalena have planned for this place, and for other ventures in Nepal, and I hope it all comes to fruition. They have a great hostel, and you will not be disappointed if you use them for your accomodation in Kathmandu!

Thanks!

We are a family of 6 traveling around the world for one year. We looked on internet and found this backpaker hostel.

We send a message, the answer was very quick. The price is very good for what you get. It make you feel like home in Kathmandu. The staff is always there to help. The rooms and dorms are very very clean. What can we say about the food: fabulous.
Everything is new and many improvements are on the way.
The place is very different of Thamel, close to the monckey temple. So it is more quiet and less people, you can relax and have a very good time.
