“Great stay @ Thamel Eco Resort”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

We stayed at Thamel Eco Resort in a Deluxe Double and were very happy with the room and service by the staff. We initially had a standard room on the 1st floor, which we found noisy as it was outside the restaurant/bar seating area. After advising staff at reception, they happily changed us to our requested deluxe room for our future stays. They remembered us when we returned for our future stays and were very obliging with any of our requests/queries. Staff at the bar/restaurant were also genuinely welcoming. Rooms are very clean and the tranquility of the garden/restaurant area was bliss compared to the chaos of the city outside. Congratulations to the staff for making our stay comfortable and memorable.

My son and I recently stayed here for a few days but were very grateful for the peaceful haven it provided. My son was a wee bit culture shocked with Dubai but was very appreciative to emerge into the civilised and very quaint setting of Eco resort. The service was very helpful and welcoming and they were to lengths to help us get an alternative nights accommodation when we needed one.
The rooms were clean and comfortable and the meals were delicious, even a quite drink in the afternoon was pleasant in the gorgeous garden setting. I would recommend this hotel for any length of stay, great location, great place

I have never been to Nepal before, so it is hard to compare this experience to another. We only stayed in the Thamel Eco Resort in Kathmandu prior to our trek and after. Our first room was poorly lit and small, but it was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was an all-in-one scenario, but we did have a hot shower, just remember to close the toilet seat and put the toilet paper away from shower spray. Upon our return to the hotel after our trek, we stayed on the ground floor. This room was larger, and we had a tub!
The staff is wonderful. The food is pretty good as well. Yoga room is calm with its low beamed ceilings and breezes drifting in through open windows.
Location is great. Not sure I could have found it without help, but that is part of why it is so great, quiet and lovely spot.
If you are visiting Nepal for the first time, do not be surprised by lack of electricity or wifi. It does come back, but typically when it is dark.
I would recommend this hotel for those who like a little quiet and on a budget.

I am thankful to have called Thamel Eco Resort home base for an extended stay in Kathmandu. The rooms are pleasant, elegant in there simplicity; the staff gracious, welcoming and easy to communicate with. The walk, to the end of an alleyway, to Thamel Eco Resort is a lovely transition from the frenetic pace of Thamel, to the retreat of the hotel. It was just right.

With the hotel centrally located you are within walking distance of shops, dining and attractions; one morning we even walked to Swayambhunath. The hotel is clean and the staff constantly at work, making improvements. The gardener lovingly attends potted plants that are scattered throughout, including the rooftop deck, which all makes for a pleasing atmosphere. And the central courtyard, in the excitement of Thamel, gives space to breath. There is complementary filtered water available (a bonus for those considering how many plastic bottles you may otherwise go through). The food is fresh and satisfying and the complementary breakfast is ample and varied. There is a spa attached - I had a reviving, post village stay, massage treatment. Sitting on the balcony, soaking sun into my damp, Pacific Northwest bones, drinking milk tea in the afternoon was lovely. I look forward to my next visit.

Its worth paying the extra 10 USD for a deluxe room with a comfy double bed. The hotel was very well staffed (very friendly & helpful staff), Very clean. Reasonably priced bar. Excellent food. Buffet style breakfast - very varied choice. Very good, cheap buffet dinner and a la carte menu.
Take earplugs (noise from other rooms & dogs barking at night) and take a multi point adaptor to charge phones etc. Take torch - power cuts occur regularly. Hot water also a bit hit & miss but this is normal in Nepal.
TVs in all rooms, air con in the deluxe room and more space and a larger bathroom with toilet roll & basic toiletries provided.
Lovely gardens, it really does look like the website photos. An ideal base pre & post trekking in the popular tourist region of Thamel.

Yes, the electricity is intermittent, along with the hot water, but that is Nepal for you. By Nepalese standards this is a very nice hotel. The garden area is lovely and it's a good spot from which to explore Kathmandu before your trek. The staff were all very nice too. I would stay here again.

We stayed at the Thamel Eco Resort for two days prior to an Everest Base Camp trek in early April and one night towards the end of April. The room the first time was small, just enough space for two single beds and little else and up on the fifth floor, one very small non opening window and when the air con was not working, very hot and stuffy, so much so the front door needed to be opened to let in air. The room was clean.

The shower was a joke, warm water for a minute or two before going cold and when the power went out, which was frequent, the hotel generator did not always come on and you stayed in the dark and got hot. The second stay of one night was better, a larger, cleaner room on the second floor with a double bed and the shower worked fine with warm water when required.

The hotel is well placed amidst the shops, restaurants and hubbub of Thamel, but this prime position also allows noise pollution throught the day and night and ear plugs are a must if you expect to get sleep. The noise from inconsiderate guests chatting and yelling from the courtyard below as well as the nightly noise fights between dogs and roosters will keep you awake.

Breakfast was ample on all mornings with a wide choice including eggs cooked the way you requested, plus plenty of other choices to satisfy most people.

A nice courtyard to relax in and enjoy food and drink, and mix and mingles with other guests.

The hotel staff were warm and friendly and eager to please.

This is a hotel for pre and post trekkers and people are placed here by their trekking group, so little or no choice of hotel selection, the accomodation is included in the trekking package, however if you do have a choice, choose elsewhere, there are better places to be had.

I would not stay here again and would not recommend.
