“Skip the laundry service”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

This hotel is fairly nice, but we were very put off by how they handled laundry service. After just arriving in Kathmandu and before heading out for the evening we asked if there was a spot nearby to drop some laundry. The front desk insisted we drop it with them for 100 rupee/kg. We agreed, and immediately felt foolish as soon as we stepped on the street and saw places everywhere advertising 50 rupee/kg. At that point we shrugged it off, figuring we were just paying for the convenience of having it done at the hotel. However, when the laundry arrived several hours late (delaying our departure from Kathmandu) and we were asked to pay 200 rupee/kg my husband resisted. They eventually accepted the agreed upon 100 rupee/kg fee, but we left with a seriously bad taste in our mouth from this hotel.

That being said, rooms are decent and the rooftop breakfast is nice. Just take your laundry elsewhere :)

Dear Guest,
Namaste from the family home Kathmnadu,
Just read your reviews on tripadvisor ,I really appreciate your time to write this reviews,I have called the meeting between all my staffs in the reception and ask them about your problem and I found out that you and the reception had misunderstanding some how ,its not a big issue but I strongly told all the staff not to make any profit on such stuff
I am soryy from my side as well ,this time you had this problem because we do not have system of doing the laundry by kilo,we only take it by piece and the reception was confuse as well with our laundry person, of course the hotel is more expensive then outside which we always tell our guest openly
At the end we are really sorry for the felling you had ,I hope we can see you in our home for the next time and will make your stay more comfortable

This hotel was great. Mukti, the owner was also very helpful, he organized a good trip for me to Chitwan, white water rafting, and Pokhara. Yes, I'm sure he got a commission out of it, but at the same time I appreciated him suggesting interesting things to do that I had not considered (in the end I spent less money, and saw more interesting things, than I had been originally planning!).

The hotel itself was wonderfully clean. The beds were comfortable. The rooftop restaurant for breakfast was also really nice. I stayed there on 3 separate occasions during my time in Nepal.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a good place to stay, at a reasonable price, in Thamel.

I used Trip Advisor to narrow my search of Kathmandu hotels to two or three and ended up booking with Hotel Family Home last month. I was booking for myself (from India) and for two friends who would be joining me from the US for a 10-day trek of the Annapurna Sanctuary. Briefly, the hotel manager, Mukti Pandey, was instrumental in many ways. Besides booking a triple room in Kathmandu, he made a booking for us at the Hotel Family Home in Pokhara (managed by his brother) where we needed to go to begin our trek. He furthermore booked our flights. I could have obtained the same rates, but having him manage the flights saved time and hassle. I don't know if booking the flights via Mukti made a difference, but the night before we changed for a later flight with no charge. Mukti provided us with transfers to/from both hotels. Staff with our names on signs greeted us on time. Both the Kathmandu and Pokhara hotels are recently built (the latter less than two years old), clean, spacious, and comfortable. Both feature complimentary breakfasts, and the Kathmandu hotel's restaurant is atop the building offering a panorama of the city. (The views from our room in the Pokhara hotel were lovely.) Mukti can provide other services such as booking guides and/or porters for trekkers. In short were I to return to either place, I would book with the Hotel Family Home chain.

Very nice cosy hotel with bright clean rooms and excellent service. We stayed in one 3 bed and in one double bed room. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The very best is the nice garden terrace on the rooftop and the delicious breakfast. Some other friends who stayed in other hotels have been jealous and also came over for breakfast. Value for money is definitely very good. Times of the power cut offs are communicated and anyway during daytime (when you are usually not in the room), so did not affect us. When we go next time to Kathmandu we will definitely again stay there and also recommend to our friends!
Thank you!!!

We stayed here for a number of nights on a few different occasions (between treks and trips) when in Nepal in April 2013 and it is a perfect hotel to base yourself in. Its location is very central for Thamel and all members of staff were very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. We found the rooms to be good value for money and were spacious and clean. The ensuite in the room was modern. There wasn't always hot water, which wasn't an issue for us(nothing like a coldish shower to start the day) but there was hot water in the afternoon/evening time. There is a very good breakfast provided on the rooftop which will set you up for the day. There also is wifi available. We would definately recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a more basic room (without aircon) as aircon wont work at times when the electricity is off a...

Dear valued guest ,
Namaste , we are proud to read your words here on trip advisor about your stay with us ,thank you very much for your great comment about the staffs/rooms/breakfast/ location and the wifi
About the hot shower let me clear you ,as you know we have the hot shower running by the solar and electric power but it is always good and very hot shower at the evening because of the sun and another region there might take few minute to get hot water in the moring since we have long pipe line and not many people using it in the morning ,but for sure there are always hot water even in the morning most of the time
At the end we really appreciate for your valuable time to write this review which encourage us to make the guest more happy and we looking forward to seeing you in our home again

My fist visit to Nepal ended excellently due to the help of Hotel management Mr Muktey and others. Rooms are Big and excellent interiors, wash room interiors having world class standards. All the staff members are cooperative, coordinal and helpfull. Roof top restaurant is excellent, they provided delicious Break-fast particularly poori and alloo excellent for Indians. Travel desk at Hotel provided cab to visit patan, baktapur and nagarkot in reasonable price. Hotel situated in heart of Thamil very convenient to all the people for shopping, restaurants and sight seeing.

It was a pleasant stay in Family Home. The beds and room was good. But what made the stay pleasant is their service. They picked us from the airport. We booked ticket for going to Pokhara from their travel agency(Baba Adventure). They picked us to the bus station from the hotel and also returned us to the bus station from Pokhara to Kathmandu.

The manager, Babu was helpful. They gave us a good exchange rate. The breakfast was yummy. Overall, I would recommend the hotel and would love to stay their again!
