Very pleased we chose Cafe Mitra, after reading about it on trip advisor and the rough guide I knew straight away it was the place to stay for my husband and I. Quiet and peaceful in the hussle and bustle of Thamel. Enjoyed our breakfasts in the pretty garden. Very friendly staff especially Jimmy the dog! Thankyou

I found cafe Mitra in an Elle decor article, and true to form this is the place to stay in Kathmandu if you are the stylish type and love a hidden gem of a boutique b&b.

centrally located right in the main hub of thamel, cafe mitra has a chilled out courtyard and first floor rooftop deck which makes hanging out here quite pleasant. The rooms are incredibly clean and very tasteful, the beds big and cosy.

The problem is that you can find comparable hotels for about half the price in Kathmandu. At $90 per night, it's well overpriced. Definitely worth paying slightly more for the tasteful design but not double the norm.

Rooms are very small so make sure you really like your travel companion a lot and definitely not great for friends sharing.

The staff are nice but don't go out of their way and the food is pretty good but not amazing.

Bottom line, if you love style above all definitely worth staying here but if you are after value for money, maybe mot the best bet.

Situated in the heart of busy and noisy Thamel, Cafe Mitra with its delightful garden is a perfect retreat with a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. The well furnished bedrooms with hot water showers and modern toilets are clean and very well maintained.
The staff are friendly and attentive and the ''hands on'' owner is always about and happy to offer any help he can.
Delicious food and good wine.
Informal surroundings and with its three resident dogs (all vaccinated) including the very charming and friendly ''Jimmy'' makes this a real home from home.
Due to its limited number of rooms you need to book well in advance.

Room Tip: Room furthest from entrance as it's the largest.

Dear Sam and Tony

Thank you for your glowing review of Café Mitra rooms, albeit almost a year later. How time flies!

It was wonderful to have you with us and look forward to seeing you again soon. By that time, we may even have 4 more rooms, taking the total to 8 rooms.

Lots of love

I have been a Cafe Mitra fan for a number of years and whenever I head back to Kathmandu I make my way to Mitra. Delicious food, great wine, fabulous service and peace in the heart of Thamel is what draws me back again and again. It's taken many forms over the years, but this gem of a place always retains its heart. Definitely go for a meal or dessert or drinks when in K-town, if you don't you will miss one K-town's most memorable experiences.

Me and my boyfriend spent 5 nights in this lovely hotel. Hospitality, quality of the food and especially the cleanness of the hotel is truly amazing. Plus, it has a very quiet and relaxing garden in the middle of crazy Thamel. During our vacation we spent sometime in Pokhara as well and now we are back in Mitra and we feel like we are home. And its so nice to see the super cute and friendly dogs of Mitra again. I recommend this place to everyone.

Dear Kiraz

This is super late thank you. We are so glad you enjoyed staying with us and our 3 friendly dogs, Jimmy, Dukey and Hakuba.

Hope to see you someday again in Nepal. We are adding 4 more rooms, so bring your friends along!

I was in Istanbul earlier this year, in mid-February. Your country is beautiful with amazing history and architecture. I visited Kappadokya, Ephesus, Prince's Islands and the catacombs.

I stayed at Cafe Mitra in spring 2012 and it was absolutely beautiful. Everyone is really friendly - including the dogs! - and the room was immaculate and comfortable.

The restaurant food was delicious and, as I was staying on my own, it was great to sit and chat with the owner and manager and really feel at home.

Would thoroughly recommend it if you want somewhere a bit more special than the rest of the Thamel options...

I have just returned from staying 5 nights at Cafe Mitra.... it was a little haven in a crazy city and I loved it! The owner, Kunal, is meticulous about everything he does and it shows. The food is absolutely delicious, the rooms are immaculately clean and the garden peaceful and charming. Kunal can advise you on shopping, sightseeing etc and is a fountain of knowledge. My friend and I went trekking, rafting etc. and would always look forward to returning to our small but perfect haven in Thamel. Can't recommend it enough!

Tucked away in a quiet landscaped garden in the middle of the vibrant madness of Thamel, Kathmandu's tourist epicentre, Cafe Mitra has confidently assumed the mantle of one of Nepal's most innovative restaurants along with 4 clean and quiet guest rooms with en suite bathrooms with plenty of hot & cold water, ample garden and terrace space. The rooms are a clever combination of colourful Asia anchored by the sophistication of Europe. The cafe, headed by the owner educated in hotel management in Switzerland, and the kitchen and its team trained by a local chef trained in London & New York. Renowned for blending the best of East with the best of West, the cafe is popular with local and foreign residents, as well as with visitors in search of a cuisine which is excitingly foreign yet not too exotic. Cafe Mitra is an unexpected oasis which the modern day discerning travellers have appreciated greatly. And we hope they will continue to do. You can walk to it via the bustling local market place known as Ason Tole. Swoyambhunath Stupa, aka Monkey Temple, is an easy 30 mins' walk away. The Garden of Dreams is just around the corner, and the Narayanhiti Palace museum, the former residence of the Kings of Nepal, is another easy 10 mins walk away. At first glance, Thamel can seem chaotic, and it is, no doubt. However, the fact that this small centre in the heart of Kathmandu has all the amenities to ensure that visitors can are never far from services they require, such as travel and trekking agencies; supermarkets just in case you forgot to bring your toothbrush, or your anti-allergy pills, or your down jacket! It is easy to get your money out from ATMs; shop for souvenirs; and send them home via air cargo. So, buy your ticket, hop into the aeroplane, and allow us to introduce you to Nepal and its unique hospitality and charms! BREAKING NEWS! We are in the midst of adding 4 more guest rooms, by January 2015, taking the total count of rooms to 8. We look forward to hosting travellers from around the World! ... more   less
