We visited the temple while in Kathmandu. I liked the bells at temple, they look amazing. You can have a nice view of the city and good place to visit

Swayambunath Temple, or the monkey temple has beautiful views of Kathmandu valley. It sits on top of a hill, and is only a small walk from Thamel. The temple is shared by people of both Buddhists and Hindus, and you can see different aspects of their faith in different parts of the temple. A Stupa sits in the middle, and is surrounded by smaller structures, some housing Hindu gods.

You reach the temple by walking up a big set of steps to the top. You can take breaks while climbing up these steps, with many rest points on the way. You can also get great views from these points, and enjoy some of the nature that lines the steps. I believe there is another entrance with more accessibility, but haven't seen it myself. Although people warn that you might be harassed by monkeys, the only harassment we've received were from souvenir vendors and self-proclaimed 'guides'. The monkeys seemed to mind their own business and not bother anyone really.

I recommend that people visit this temple, but not reserve an entire day for it - although it is beautiful, it is not that big of a temple, and a few hours would suffice for a visit. Including it with other nearby attractions would probably be best.

I love Swayambhunath Temple. To me it represents everything that is Nepal. The Buddha, the amazing view of Kathmandu, the walk up the mountain, the prayer flags, the beauty and harmony, and of course the monkeys. The monkeys are clearly used to the people. They come very close to you sometimes but completely ignore you all the same. They are wild animals but they clearly coexist with the people just as I saw all over Nepal. I was warned they can snatch food from your hands or run off with cameras but witnessed no troublesome behavior. They are sure fascinating to watch. The place retains an aura of peacefulness even though there are tourists and sellers everywhere.A must see place!
