I love Swayambhunath Temple. To me it represents everything that is Nepal. The Buddha, the amazing view of Kathmandu, the walk up the mountain, the prayer flags, the beauty and harmony, and of course the monkeys. The monkeys are clearly used to the people. They come very close to you sometimes but completely ignore you all the same. They are wild animals but they clearly coexist with the people just as I saw all over Nepal. I was warned they can snatch food from your hands or run off with cameras but witnessed no troublesome behavior. They are sure fascinating to watch. The place retains an aura of peacefulness even though there are tourists and sellers everywhere.A must see place!

The Temple is at the top of a hill near the river where people are ceremonially cremated. We visited in Monsoon season during a downpour so didn't see it at it's best. Great to see the monkeys so close up but I believe they can be aggressive, especially if you're carrying bananas! Great view from the top. There is also a pool which the monkeys jump into, but we missed that because of the rain.

It is a busiest place of the valley. Thousands of devotees pay their homage every hours and days. But the view is fantastic. You can take a panoramic glance from the top. The hiking is also good for health. However, it is also overcrowded by hundreds of monkeys who are clever enough to snatch your bags or hats or even camera. The main temple site on the top is not properly cleaned after people pay their homage, mostly fruits, materials etc.
