It provides a nice view from the top of the mountain overlooking the entire Kathmandu Valley.

But there is another similar type of temple in the city of Kathmandu so if you don't have time, probably just go to the one in the city, which is more famous as well.

The one in the city is called "Boudha Temple" - Tibetan Temple

Wonderful temple, but don't expect a "view" of the valley. There are no views of the valley anywhere anymore, as it's perpetually shrouded in smog.

Beautiful and well worth a visit. You get a great view of Kathmandu as you take the steps up towards the temple. The stupa is stunning, as are the prayer-flag covered hillsides surrounding it.

The temple and surrounds are overtaken by monkeys who have made it their home.

This was my favourite of the temples I visited in Kathmandu and the Kathmandu Valley.

You can get there easily by cab from the town, and it's possible to walk.

You can't possibly go to Kathmandu without visiting this beautiful temple. My favorite memories are the prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, the smell of incense in the air, and flickering flames of the butter candles. A very large Stupa dominates the center, surrounded by prayer wheels which are constantly being turned. Although a little misty the day we were there, the view of the Kathmandu Valley is fabulous. It is also referred to as the Monkey Temple, but both times we visited, the monkeys were few and far between, and well behaved from what we could see. For those who find climbing 300 stairs a little daunting, there is another route which can be reached by car, there are still several stairs to climb, but it is much easier. Well worth visiting!

I was so looking forward to this visit after the reviews I'd read. But simply put it just didn't live up to what I had thought it would be based on so many reviews. First, it was so crowded you literally were bumped the entire time. Second, frankly the number of hawkers and stores even within the stupa itself was a very big turn off; third, well you can chose the monkeys who run across your feet or the pigeons that leave their tidings literally everywhere (including on two women who were on the receiving end in front of me). I will say the view, if you can get to the viewing area through the throng of people was amazing. That said we were pushed constantly to move along and not take up space and time to take pictures. Overall, my opinion as stated in other reviews is other temples and "things to do" are far more interesting and better use of what limited time I had.
