Ok so there are much better equipped hotels. However this hotel is 1 minute walk from centre of town with shops, bars and restaurants. Hotel sits back from the street, and is surprisingly quiet. Lovely garden too. I ate breakfast and evening meals here twice and they were both very tasty and service was fine. Internet wifi connection was free to guests. Service by reception staff was very good. Good quality bottled water available in the hotel at good prices. Bedrooms are simple, but clean. Mattress was hard but I am fine with this. Ensuite shower and toilet, again simple. Electricity blackout occur most days and hotel doesn't utilise a backup generator for guests, so often in bedrooms at night only 1 small light would be available until later in the evening when all back to normal.

Summary - good location, safe, and clean. Simple rooms, friendly staff, nice gardens and food.

Would I return again? Yes, although knowing there 5 star hotels and taxis freely available I would consider going there. Price dependant and what I was going to be doing.

We recently stayed in Hotel Shakti and we were really happy with the facilities and service. The rooms are fairly basic, but comfortable and immaculately clean. The hotel is in a beautiful old building with thick walls. There are 2 gardens - in front of the hotel and behind it, creating a cool and lush oasis amid the dust & noise of Kathmandu. The rates are affordable, food is good and the location in Thamel means you can walk everywhere. It is very close to shops and restaurants. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. On our next trip to Nepal, we will definitely stay there again!

The room is extremely basic. No tea and coffee making facilities, no iron, no hairdryer, no bathmat, towels that have seen better days. No air conditioning but this was not an issue as the weather was really pleasant and the open windows let fresh air in. Housekeeping make the beds and change the towels each day but that's it. The room has a dampness about it, but that's always going to be there when you are in such a humid city.

The power goes out sporadically throughout the day but this happens right throughout the city. The wifi is very patchy and is prone to be weak due to congestion so best to use it late at night. It's only available in the lobby and costs 1USD for the length of your stay per room, not per person.

There is a small restaurant that is attached to the hotel which is where breakfast is served. Breakfast is western a la carte and the set breakfast is huge and great value for money. The gardens are beautiful and really well maintained. Location is great as the hotel is set back off the road so is not noisy.

The worst thing about this hotel is the bed. The mattress is so thin that you can feel the wood of the bed underneath. It is almost crippling and it woke me several times due to the pain it was causing. The best thing about the hotel is the staff. They all spoke fantastic English and were really friendly.

I would not stay here again simply because of the bed. If you get a terrible night's sleep, then the whole day is ruined. It's a pity the beds are so bad, because this could be a really good budget hotel if they addressed that problem.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the ground floor, they are only a few steps from the garden, lobby and restaurant...

This hotel is suprisingly quiet in the middle of a crowded, smoggy Katmandu.
The managment and staff are very kind and helpful.
The rooms are comfortable. There is no airco, but all rooms have a (noisy) fan). Most of the bathrooms are good. The rooms are not always very clean. A guest left som bedbugs, that were not removed by the cleaning-staff.
The diner is simple but safe.

Room Tip: On the roof-deck there is space to dry the laundry. Wifi is in the lobby and on the roof-deck.

I stayed in this hotel 4-5 times in less than a year. They have some really nice rooms and some not very nice ones. There are big differences but hopefully they're slowly remodeling them one by one. First time I stayed in really ugly, filthy dark room facing noisy street where the bathroom looked like it has not been cleaned up for years. It was probably just too old. Last time I got very nice clean, remodeled room (bathroom) facing quiet backyard. Funny thing is they charge the same price no matter how the room look like. If you walk within 10 min radius most of other hotels charge significantly less (50% or even less) for the same standard. However, finding quiet room without the street noise is really difficult in that area so Shakti has few hidden jewels. I read review that the higher the floor at shakti the better the rooms. In my case it was exactly the opposite.

stayed here for 2 nights at the end of a Gecko Tour. The location is fantastic. Close to some great restaurants, shops, 5 min walk to the Dream Gardens and Palace Museum. The bed was so hard and the mattress was uneven i had a double bed and it had 2 different size matteresses on the bed. First night had no fan but was able to get supplied with a portable fan for the second night. Paid 100rupees for their internet password and the wifi there is crap probaably only had 5 mins of internet in 2 days. staff werent that friendly they were more interested in reading the newspaper.

Good location for Thamel, close to the bazaars for last minute Trek gear and Supermarket. Also close to many great restaurants. The rooms vary from very basic to moderately equipped. The room I had for the first couple of nights was a twin room, even though I asked for double. Had an untiled bathroom (other rooms were tiled and had bath tubs. This was more of a wet room. Most nights we were kept awake by the crowing cockerel or the sounds of revving scooters (if it's even possible to rev those things). When we returned from the Trek the hotel room was moderately better and bed was more comfortable. Breakfast is very good, with friendly staff in hotel restaurant. We left our suitcases with the hotel, whilst we went trekking, upon our return we were given back our suitcases which were in a filthy state. They had been placed in a room next too where some construction work was taking place, with no thought to covering up the suitcases whilst the work was carried out. When we needed to checkout later than planned, due to late night flight, the hotel management then became disagreeable and unaccommodating. We had explained the late checkout to our Trek organizer long before arriving in KTM, and we were told there would be no issue and no extra charges. On the day, the hotel manager made demands for money to be paid in US dollar for the extra 3 hours the room was needed for. Eventually the issue was resolved by our Trek operator. Given the choice, i wouldn't come back and stay here or recommend this to anyone, given the treatment we received on our last day by the manager.
