My friend and I did a 9 day trek which included the trek to Annapurna Base Camp and then another loop out to Poon Hill. While walking there, we would occasionally meet trekkers who promised us a heaven on earth... but we did not fully believe this description until we arrived at the foot of the 10th highest mountain in the world and experienced its beauty and serenity. We took Diamox (the altitude sickness medication) and I still experienced some minor altitude sickness in the final 2 hours before arrival, but it got better when I took the treatment dose of Diamox so I was able to continue. The landscape of the final two hours is dramatic, and gives a taste of the Base Camp. We noticed that many trekkers arrived and left right away, but my friend and I stayed around 3 hours enjoying the beautiful scenery. Walking a bit beyond the area of the tea houses, we wandered around the area of the glacier and appreciated the prayer flags set against the stark snowy background. Truly spectacular and unforgettable.

I just got back from a magical trek around a portion of the Annapurna Circuit. We were lucky to get a wonderful guide, Chhatra Karki who kept us motivated, informed and safe. (plus we laughed a lot!) The experience left me craving more. The scenery is magnificent and the people are charming. I definitely encourage anyone in reasonably good physical condition to go (I went with my 79 year old dad) Chhatra's email is: -- . He has 13 years of trekking experience and his english is excellent. I recommend him highly.

My friends and I (party of four) did the Annapurna circuit in October 2008. We arrived Kathmandu, where we obtained the walking permit (you'll need at least four headshot photos for the paperwork and lots of time, so plan in advance and observe the national/religious holidays when everything is closed) and hired a porter-guide and a porter. Altogether very easy. So it is definitely not necessary to spend a lot of money on agencies which organize everything before your trip. We then hired a jeep for little money. The driver took us to Bhulbhule (the last two hours pure horror due to the road conditions), where we started our fourteen day hike. It is highly recommendable to round the Annapurna range counter-clockwise, due to much better acclimatization (smooth ascent as compared to the other direction) and the extremely challenging ascent to the Thorong La pass. We had the time of our lives, despite missing amenities like hot-water showers and other conveniences. The most rewarding moment was when we reached the pass at 5,416 meters. A joint "family" act. I only fear that Nepal will upgrade tourist infrastructures to attract even higher numbers so that the peace and tranquility will be lost one day.
