The setting has to be among the nicest in Kathmandu: away from the noisy streets, overlooking the pond and a nice park. Get a table outside and definitely refuse one inside. Since the food is nothing special, the atmosphere is important. The pita sandwiches make a good lunch. Don't get the iced tea - it had a very chemical taste :(
But I don't understand how the service can be so consistently slow and bad!
An annual pass for the Garden of Dreams gets you free entry (200 otherwise) and 10% off the bill. Worth it if you work nearby.

The surrounding garden and terrace seating option is what makes this place special. Great for kids as they can roam around in the garden while parents are having lunch or dinner. If you live in KTM worth getting the annual membership to the park which gives you a 10% discount at the restaurant. The pita sandwiches are excellent.

Going into the property (Garden of Dreams) puts you in another world outside Kathmandu. Serene, clean, well-manicured gardens. Kaiser Cafe is in this property. We had the Kaiser breakfast which was good though more expensive than the normal rates outside. However, the eating pleasure was made even better by the surrounding ambience. Really lovely and highly recommendable. The cafe is currently run by Dwarika's - one of the premier hotels in Nepal. Kaiser Cafe is a must-see while in Kathmandu.

The Garden of Dreams is a great location in Kathmandu. There is a small charge for entry of 200 rupees per person, and this is clearly put to good use keeping the gardens immaculate.

Its a shame the same thing can't be said for the Kaiser cafe. We visited for lunch on a Sunday and was disappointed to find that the menu consisted either of a barbecue or a couple of other items(not much choice).

We weren't that hungry and the barbecue was covered in flies (a lot of the food was not covered) so we just ordered a cake and tea (which was on a special deal).

The service was extremely slow (it took over 20 mins for the waiter to bring over the pre cooked cakes!), lots of the staff were stood around doing nothing and those that were working were unfriendly and unapproachable.

The cakes were nothing special and the only thing that made up for it was the great old colonial building and the fantastic location which is truly spectacular and tranquil in the middle of bustling Kathmandu.

To top it all off the deal we had ordered that included cake and tea for a discount was not honoured and we were charged an extra 300 rupees for tea and our waiter didn't seem to care that he was ripping us off.

Needless to say I would recommend visiting the garden of dreams but would not recommend the Kaiser cafe to my worst enemy.
