“Kathmandu's undiscovered jewel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2009

Our stay at Shivapuri Heights Cottage turned out to be the perfect ending to an unbelievable 17 day trek to Everest Base camp. A trip to Nepal can shock even the most seasoned traveler. The culture, traffic, sounds and pace of Kathmandu are equally exhilarating and exhausting at the same time. We arranged our trip through Steve Webster at Escape2Nepal and had the good fortune of booking a room at the cottage at the end of the trek prior to returning to the States. It proved to be an invaluable transition back into civilization and will remain indelibly engrained as one of the highlights of the trip. Dinner on the terrace was almost magic as the sun set and the lights of the city came up. The staff was very attentive, discrete and polite and the food outstanding – most of it fresh from the garden on site. In retrospect, we only wish that we had allotted an extra couple of nights.

Although not within walking distance of Thamal, it is precisely the fact that it is slightly away from town that makes it so special and unique. Do not let its location deter you from experiencing some of the finest Kathmandu has to offer. It is truly an undiscovered jewel.

Shivapuri Cottage is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the Kathmandu valley. I spent a night up at the cottage in March and it was a perfect evening. From arrival (being picked up in a jeep to climb the steep hill to the cottage) to a fantastic dinner by the bonfire overlooking the Kathmandu valley, everything was taken care of. Close enough to Kathmandu to allow you to escape for an evening, it is one of the few places that I would recommend to family and friends.

Shivapuri Heights is delightfully situated on a hillside overloking the whole of the Kathamandu Valley. It requires a bit of effort to get there, but-boy-is it worth it when you do!!

The setting of the cottage is enough in itself, but when backed up by the excellent service and comfortable "home from home" surroundings, it turns a stay at Shivapuri into an experience which will stay long in the memory.

Approaching up a steep hillside, you suddenly come upon a landscaped terrace and turn to find stunning views over the dusty city that you have just left behind you.

Arriving with a group of 15 or so who had recently returned from trekking, it was at this point that cold beers and fruit juices were thrust into our hands and we all sat down to a wonderful lunch served in typically Nepali style but with an "al fresco" ambience.

The service was so attentive, the views so enchanting, and the atmosphere so relaxing that we wanted to stay there all day and it was with real sadness that we left this oasis of calm and set off down the hill again.

A few days later, I returned with my wife to spend the night, and we were joined by the genial host Steve Webster of Escape2Nepal [--] and his two delightful children Sitara and Priani.

We were now able to experience the full facilities available at the cottage. The cottage itself is very comfortable furnished in traditional style and provides a wide selection of music, books and games if you just want to relax and while away the time.

Dinner- served on the terrace as the sun set across the valley- was a delight, and we stayed there long into the evning as the lights started twinkling in the valley below, a truly wondeful setting.

After a sound nights sleep in very comfortable bedding, we awoke to birdsong and breakfast-again served on the terrace -where we watched the city coming to life and thanked our lucky stars that we relaxing in this haven of tranquility.

It was with genuine sadness that we said our goodbyes and returned to the dusty city below.

Had a wonderful birthday here, thanks to the hospitality of the owners, delicious food, tasteful decor and a bonfire overlooking the valley. An amazing place to escape to, if the sensory overload of the city gets a bit too much. Beautiful views from the patio, the possibility of a hike in the national park, and more than anything, the intimacy of a small place run by warm and friendly people.

Stayed at Shivapuri Heights at the end of a wonderful adventure in Nepal, culminating in a hectic day in Kathmandu. There were 7 of us, all from the same class at school, who were relieved to escape the noise and mayhem of Kathmandu. It was our last night in Nepal and we all enjoyed the peace, the view, the welcome, the food and atmosphere at Shivapuri Heights, before embarking on the trip home to our busy lives and families.

  • Liked — The relaxed atmosphere without fuss
  • Disliked — The climb up, as the road was being repaired. Not normally like this.

Escape2Nepal and the fab Steve Webster organised a memorable trip for 7 middle-aged ladies taking in 'soft' adventure and elephant polo. We ended our trip with a short but wonderful visit to Shivapuri Heights.

The location, views, ambience & attention to our every need was magnificent. A massage in the tented retreat on one of the cottage's terraces was unmissable - otherworldy and so relaxing.

Those who trekked a little around the Cottage enjoyed the input of the Cottage staff whose knowledge of and interest in their 'patch' was a great addition to the experience.

Dusk and dawn over Kathmandu seen from Shivapuri were spectacular - and the cottage is indeed a retreat to be savoured.

Shivapuri Heights is a very special place and has such a calming and relaxing atmosphere. Its basic rustic decor is both charming, warm and welcoming.

From arriving at the gates of the Hari Krishna temple and walking up to cottage through the village to being warmly greeted upon arrival with a refreshing glass of water the whole ambience is just magical.

The views are spectacular; I found myself sitting for at least an hour marvelling at the views of the bowl that is Kathmandu Valley.

The service is great and everything you need is available on tap, including drinks, food and even the local barber which is just 'such an experience' to have your haircut whilst looking accross the valley, and sipping a glass of chilled beer in between!

The evenings are great as well! Its great sitting by a fire again with snacks and drinks which is followed by dinner - either western or nepali - depending on your preference. The clarity of the stars are amazingly crystal clear away from the light poluted Kathmandu.

Accommodation is quite comfortable and romantic with dimmly lit buddha statue alcoves that sets a beatiful ambience. The rooms are sound proofed, so one isn't disturbed by the sound of chattering children or any other potential noise disturbance throughout the house.

Local walks from the cottage are great. We walked to a waterfall, stripped off to our bare minimums and went in! Very cold, but very refreshing and a childhood dream accomplished!

In general you can't go wrong. Shivapuri is relatively inexpensive, very charming and leaves you wanting more! What more could one wish for.
