I just came back from 8 days in Bhutan. It was hard treking but the idea was to go strong every day 6-15 miles a day but to come back every night to nice comfortable hotel. The first 3 days I spent in the Tashi Taj. Enjoyed every min of it. Coming back after long day to the superb service and atmosphere with great food and great massage.
Highly recommended.
Make sure to book the Travelocity SPA package which cost me about $275/night including breakfast and SPA and one dinner or lunch. This is amazing value compare to $375 / night without any additions as regular rate.
The hotel has about 70 rooms and when I was there there were only a few but still the staff worked incredibly well. It was a real pleasure

We spent two weeks in Bhutan and spent time at the Taj and the Aman resorts. The rooms at the Taj were very well designed - giving it a Bhutanese feeling - well decorated with local pieces of art - but also including all the essential high end features including stellar bathrooms. The food included Bhutanese, Asian and European. In contrast to the other (more expensive) Aman option the Taj offers the full range of services, a very responsive staff (who will customize your experience), and a wider variety of food. Since the hotel is still very new - the retail center (w/ multiplex theatre!) opposite is not yet completed.

Of course the Taj lived up to its name, and the hotel is a luxury. Given that the standard hotels are pretty basic, it stands above, but you pay for it. The Bar was good, great mixed drinks, though expensive. The breakfast was also very good.

We stayed three nights at the Taj Tashi, a newly constructed luxury hotel that is a joint venture of the Taj hotel group from India and a Bhutanese company. The Taj is a blend of traditional and contemporary and even employs two monks who bless you upon arrival and departure and perform some other daily rituals for the hotel.

The rooms are large and well appointed with good soundproofing. The staff was friendly and eager to please but seemed to need more training. Checking out was time consuming and confusing and after we returned to the US we had an additional, albeit small, charge made to our credit card. Even though the hotel is new some maintenance issues needed addressing; for example there was ongoing maintenance to the elevators so we often took the stairs, the heating in the restaurant did not seem to work most mornings, the heated towel racks didn't work.

Our overall impression was that they are still working on things and that it will be great option once they work out the bugs.

After a week of travelling around Bhutan in standard government approved hotels, the complete luxury of the Taj Tashi was wonderful. This is probably the only true luxury hotel in Bhutan. The Amankoras are not really hotels, in my opinion. They are more of a luxury resort/lodge and don't provide all the services and facilities that a hotel does.

The rooms are large and nicely furnished. A large comfortable window sofa, lounge chair, nice LCD TV with many international stations, heated bathroom floors, separate rain shower, large tub, huge extremely comfortable (California??) King bed...

On a previous visit to Bhutan, the Taj Tashi was still under construction and I stayed at Amankora in Thimphu. Although I considered the service at Amankora to be slightly more polished, I much preferred the Taj Tashi. The rooms are more luxurious, the bathroom is not open plan, you have a TV, and there is none of the communal dining that the Aman lodges feature. Amankora charges $1200/day compared to $275 at the Taj Tashi which is certainly another factor in my preference.

I did not like the restaurant however. It felt cold and cavernous with what seemed like 50 foot ceilings. Room Service was exactly the same price as dining in the restaurant, so we choose to eat our meals in the comfort of our room. If you feel like venturing out for food, the hotel is conveniently located in 'downtown' Thimphu, Seasons Pizza and The Zone are a couple of good choices for some comfort food from home.

The Indian management has a great team of enthusiastic Bhutanese employees who are always smiling and offering their assistance.

For luxury in Thimphu, this is the hotel.

FYI...The previous review is reviewing some other hotel...certainly not one in Bhutan.

this is one of the nicest hotels in thimphu- it is located on the end of the main street, adjacent to cafes and shops.

however, this hotel is still unfinished. despite its apparent beauty, i noticed on arrival that this hotel is definitely not maintained very well. there is water leakage in the bathroom and cracks everywhere. for a brand new hotel, i don't think that is acceptable.

other than that the rooms are very tastefully done. we were provided with two bottles of mineral water on arrival, a kettle and teabags were provided.

the food was lovely, the restaurant thongsel serves indian cuisine mostly (not bhutanese) and the staff are very attentive and eager to please.

This is a lovely hotel with wonderful and caring service. In fact, they couldn't do enough for us and when we encountered problems in obtaining a permit to visit other parts of the country(which was my fault) they knocked themselves out trying to get it. Although they were unsuccessful, apparently they felt so bad they even discounted my room rate.
We were disappointed with the food in the Bhutanese restaurant but the Indian food in the other was outstanding.
The room is lovely with dark wood floors and the largest bed I ever slept in. The bathroom is large and the shower is great with wonderful pressure and lots of hot water.
All in all, a wonderful stay in a lovely hotel-kudos to the excellent management.
