Excellent in e v e r y way - loved my room with a balcony and luxurious bathtub, the Jiva spa and above all, the hospitality of the hotel staff.

My stay here was so so good that I chose to explore western Bhutan by staying at Taj Tashi and driving to the other places. Nothing against other hotels in Paro and Punakha but they're not even half as nice and similarly priced.

While I am used to excellent service at Taj hotels, the Tashi staff managed to beat even that. One front desk employee (Ms Rinzen) took exceptional care and would call in to check if everything is okay (they arranged the sightseeing) even when she was at home unwell! Not just her, the whole team was outstanding and that makes all the difference in a good stay and a memorable one.

Being a delighted Taj client, I have frequented their other Jiva spas in India. This one is as good if not better. Recommend their hot stone bath besides the usual massages. The hotel has cultural dances in the evening which are fun to watch and a priest in the morning who comes and can say prayers on your behalf.

Some other reviewers on this hotel had complaints on food. I agree with them partly but also note that food is a problem in Bhutan in general. Their local cuisine is nothing great and even the outside restaurants I dined at in Thimpu and Paro were disappointing. Specifically at Taj Tashi, the problem at their restaurant is to do with variety rather than taste, and yes it can be quite expensive.

While there is a shopping area outside the hotel, that is more for browsing than actual buying. I highly recommend a visit to the gallery of a well known local artist who has done the large painting behind the reception desk of Taj Tashi. Once you see that painting you will know why! His art is extremely expensive but also extremely worth the price.

I cannot wait to go back to Bhutan, simply to stay at Taj Tashi where they made me feel like I am in heaven.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with the balcony (there are only 4 or 5 of those). Having breakfast there in the morni...

Having enjoyed Taj hospitality and service in India, we were prepared to be impressed by this property. Located in the center of Thimphu, right beside the well-organized craft market and a short walk from the covered market, this modern hotel adopts the architectural style of its country and neighborhood, down to the stones 'holding down the roof'.

Arriving at the soaring lobby, tastefully decorated with local art and fresh flowers, you are met with herbal tea (available 24/7 in the lobby) and a prayer scarf. Check-in in speedy and you are shown to a large room with a view. Done in traditional style, with lots of wood and beautiful woven upholstery. Good business desk, comfortable bed, well-appointed bathroom satellite television and (pricy) wifi. When you return to the lobby, you are invited to be blessed in a brief service at the hotel shrine, which is accessed down the stairs through the restaurant, whose soaring windows overlook the wooded hills that surround the city.

Each evening there is a cultural presentation of Bhutanese singing and dance around a firepit outside. Once was fine.

We found the buffet breakfast more than satisfactory, and it was included in our corporate room rate. It is not as lavish as at five-star hotels in India, but there is a more than adequate choice of juices, yogurt, cheese and meat, cereals and cheese, eggs any style and lots of filter coffee.

We did not use the gym, but our friends said it was the best in Thimphu.

All the staff were hospitable and helpful, with much better attitude than staff in some Taj hotels we have visited. They need to work some on anticipating guest needs, but they work hard and are charming in every way. Bhutan is also a very relaxed country, and visitors would do well to remember that even on business one has to be flexible and enjoy the hospitality, friendliness and generosity that makes Bhutan such a prized and hard-to-access tourist destination.

Let me start with the pros: the rooms are absolutely stunning. Tastefully furnished, comfy beds, pillow menu (choose what pillow you like most-- cotton, soft/firm,etc.)
-- large bathrooms with separate shower and bathtub. The spa, gym and swimming pool are great. Clean and modern. The staff in the lobby was very friendly and helpful. Cons: Even though the breakfast buffet was large and offered many choices the food was not tasty. I am not particularly picky but I found that a taj hotel/ for the prices charged should offer better food. Also, and this was quite annoying, the cleaning staff started vacuuming the lobby and the bar area at 1 AM in the morning- since many of the rooms face an atrium where also the lobby and restaurants are located it can be noisy . I woke up because of the vacuum noise and had a hard time falling back a sleep. I have never experienced this in any other 5 star hotel.

A return to civilization after weeks in the hinterlands. The structure is lovely - especially by Thimphu standards. Management met us at the door with silk scarfs and a small ceremony. The entire staff was incredibly gracious and friendly. The rooms and appointments are far better than one experiences in most US hotels. The restaurant serves respectable western and Indian cuisine, which can be a refreshing change from the usual Bhutanese fare. There is a charge for internet, which loads slowly. Some 110v compatible outlets.
In short, possibly the best digs in Bhutan.
Skip the long strip of craft outlets adjacent to the hotel and visit the shops in town (which offer better selections). Some of the larger fabric shops offer an amazing selection (cash only). The craft shops outside of the arts school (short taxi ride from the hotel) offer the best selection of thangkas in town.

Room Tip: Almost all rooms are spacious with interesting views. Upper floors offer the best views, although e...

The Taj Tashi provides an unprecedented level of service that made our stay - and celebration of my 50th birthday in Bhutan - my most memorable to date. From our arrival, Rinzin Lhamo, Guest Relation Manager, took it upon herself to make our stay truly spectacular, even assigning the lovely and thoughtful Thinley to help us through our meals.

Aside from truly regal accommodations, some highlights included providing us with typical Drukpa dress for my wife and I as well as our two young daughters - including a custom made Goa for their stuffed animals to wear! - and help with dawning these beautiful clothes, specially organized celebratory dinner, delicious birthday cake, and a beautiful parting gift. Rinzin even organized that our suite be decorated with dozens of candles and a relaxing bath be readyafter a busy day of sightseeing in Thimpu!

I can sincerely say that in our travels around the world, being fortunate to stay in many of what are generally regarded as the "best hotels in world," I can tell you without reservation that the Taj Tashi - and the genuine care by Rinzin and her staff to make us feel truly special - is in my humble opinion on a league of its own!

Thanks to the friendly and attentive staff at the Taj Tashi, this is one stay that will foremost in our minds as what it must feel like to be a member of the Royal Family! We certainly look forward to a happy return as we exploring deeper into the genuine magic that is Bhutan.

Room Tip: Book a top floor room, facing mountain, and spring for a suite if you can. Food choices are amazing...

This hotel comes at very high cost, which is not justified by the service. The rooms are big and luxorius, though having really nothing so fancy to justify 500+ USD price tag. Management seemed to lack professional training which would one expect from the Taj group hotel.

Avoid dining here. We took bhutanese dish which came for 55 USD and was not much different from what you get in town's Bhutan Kitchen for mere 10 USD in much more beautiful interior and with more experienced staff.

Beautiful property with excellent Indian and Bhutanese hospitality. Food is very good and kids really enjoyed having Indian and Chinese food. Dances in the evening created excellent atmosphere for a long awaited holiday for our family. Spa is fantastic and you can pamper yourself with good treatments.
