Renovated in 2013 this is without a doubt Lusaka's top getaway for fine-dining, excellent wine and peaceful rest. A relaxed atmosphere within the 700 hectare game reserve and excellent service by the well-trained waiters and staff ensured that our stay was carefree and recharging. Lilayi has superb facilities including luxury chalets (biggest king-size bed we've ever seen!), glistening pool, spacious bar and restaurant overlooking the green lawns and woodlands, running paths, game drives, a visit to the Lilayi Elephant Nursery (see http://www.gamerangersinternational.org/ourprojects/elephant-orphanage-project) and truly excellent food. What a pleasure - can't wait for our next visit to Lusaka!

We stayed here both at the beginning and end of some charity work we were doing with the orphaned elephants at GRI up the road and in Kafue National Park. Absolutely no issues whatsoever. In fact after I had been bitten by a nasty spider the staff helped me acquire some antibiotics which did the trick! Lovely seasonal food and wonderful drinks aswell

Lunch here is mainly fine dining, we came here after visiting the elephants next door. The food was delicious, a little high on price but the quality was very high. Beautiful grounds with a play park for kids.

Lilayi Lodge proved to be an unexpected surprise - beautifully designed rooms, with privacy for each guest, comfortable beds, and daily complementary laundry service was a wonderful surprise. The menu is varied, meals were of a high standard with a great selection of wines to accompany it. The challenge is that the drive from the airport is rather long, the road is not of a good standard and tests ones patience if you are driving in an out of town regularly. Highly recommended though!

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

Hi Jenny,
Thank you so much for your valued review. And such a good one!
Once the rains have fully abated we intend to grade our dirt road again - as we do a couple of times each year. We are pleased to hear that the route between us and the airport is to be reduced with plans, by our governemnt, to build a new road.
(I wish we could give you a date, but we know neither this nor the length of a piece of string).
We do hope to see you again in the future.

I think Lilayi Lodge is an amazing place to stay. The rooms, the food and the setting all deserve 5 stars but the insects ruin the whole experience. I had to sleep on the bathroom floor because of the amount of insects & lizards in my room. I'm talking about giant spiders. I slept on the bathroom floor because the bathroom was the only room with no insects.

Seleqta,

Thank you for your review. And we're very sorry to hear that you didnt enjoy your stay at our Safari lodge.

We do have insects here and in the peak of the summer (when you stayed) there are more. However, we have ensured all our chalets are mosquito guazed and we have walk in mosquito nets. So the area around your bed should have been the least affected.

We are a game lodge and expect a modicum of nature joining us in our thatched chalets and we respect them as part of the ecosytem. We don't encourage the removal of any geckos or flatties (the flat spiders that live here in Zambia) as they are a very effective anti mosquito task force.

From what I can understand, you are not comfortable with insects. So if you are planning to return to Zambia I can recommend:

WInter months: May-August. The cold nights lower the insect population dramatically.
Sealed units: When you're booking accommodation look for airconditioning. Even if you dont use it this generally indicates closed windows and sealed doors.
Elevation: The higher up your room the less flying insects and therefore the fewer of their predators.
Lights: Keep your lights turned off when you dont require them. The flying insects will stay away.
Hotel: Look for hotels rather than game lodges, the more greenery, trees, bushes and lawn the more wildlife there will be.
Chat: Any of our guests are welcome to ask questions before they book. We don't mind even if you think they are daft, we've probably heard them before and are more than happy to give you as much information as we can to ensure you are completely informed. And if we're not the right place for you, we can point you in the right direction.
