From arriving after dusk to leaving much later than expected it was an experience to remember! A "welcome" at the boom entering the lodge to the greeting at the reception and welcoming into the restaurant, with a fire burning and friendly staff was something not yet experienced in such a manner here in Zambia. The interior is state of the art with touches of Africa and some modern styling mixed in subtle ways to create an elegant ambiance. The wine-list will not disappoint and a menu that will tickle any person's taste-buds. Benjamin Japp's hospitality made sure every guest needs was taken care of in every way required. I'm sure that in the future Lilayi Lodge will be a name that will come up more and more whenever people speak of Lusaka, Zambia!

Spent 4 days on business in Lusaka and a colleague recommended Lilayi. What a fantastic surprise to find a truly upmarket venue in every respect at affordable prices. The menu is small but effective and chef Dave in my opinion is the best venison chef ever, and I as rule do not like venison. The total experience was out of this world.

I stayed here by accident after trying and failing to book elsewhere, and was very glad I did. It had been shut for 9 months+ for refurbishment so wasn't on my original list. So, a few thoughts:
- rooms: individual rondavels, totally rebuilt to excellent international standards (amazing comfortable big beds, lovely décor, spacious and well appointed bathrooms (roll top baths/rain-showers, fluffy towels), satellite TV, large French doors onto own non-overlooked veranda in the grounds (more later)
- central facilities: huge thatched rondavel with trendy, quirky bar (great selection of wines both bottled and by the glass), large fireplace, plenty of comfy seating on oldy-worldy sofas and chairs, upstairs "reading" room with small library and chess and other games
- restaurant, adjacent the bar, looks amazing and with a menu that I was disappointed that I wasn't able to try as I'd been snacking on a long drive - won't make that mistake again! (Cuisine was a mix of modern international dishes and local - but the game steaks will have to be tried...)
- grounds: 600hectares (I didn't count them) of game farm: teeming with antelope (defassa waterbuck, bush buck, zebra, impala - all we saw but only passed through to and from gate); you can do game drives (included I believe in room rates); swimming pool area is simply delightful - large pool, nicely positioned; game wandering round the whole setting and round the rooms
- location: 9km from a turn-off 10km South of central Lusaka, perfect stop-over after 5hr drive from Livingstone or longer drives from Zimbabwe or Lower Zambezi camps. Early next morning it took us half an hour to get to the North side of Lusaka, and just over 4hrs total to the Copperbelt
- I have been checking on maps and I also think that there will be a way through to the airport via Leopards' Hill Rd without transiting central Lusaka - got to be a good thing! - though management would be advised to prepare a "directions" sheet for those wanting to use the route!
- Oh, and they made us a lovely take-away breakfast for our early departure!

Pricing: on a par with the international standard hotels in central Lusaka. I say, why bother with the city when you can have this?

Dear Trip Advisor users, if you are looking at the reviews for this lodge please be aware that over the last 7 months Lilayi Lodge has been completely refurbished and rebuilt so any comments about tired or dated rooms will no longer apply. The old 'rude' manager has gone and there is a brand new team who know what they are doing. All the lovely friendly staff have been retained. It was still closed when I tried to book but I got a sneak preview! It will be open for business very soon and is in the most amazing location. And you also get the Lilayi Elephant Nursery thrown in! Run by the Elephant Orphanage Project under Game Rangers International, it provides a Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release programme to get baby elephants orphaned by poaching back into the wild. You can visit every day from 11.30-1pm to see the babies feed and bath!!

Thank you for the review about our refurbishment. We've been open 8 months now and so far have had really good reviews and delightful guests. We've been very fortunate. We will continue to try and improve our service and listen to our guests feedback. So hopefully next time you're in Lusaka you will come back and try us out now we're in full swing.
