Shangri-La Hotel Uganda Ltd.
Ranked #60 of 104 Hotels in Kampala

I do NOT recommend this hotel for female travellers or anyone expecting a comfortable, upmarket stay. The room had a pungent smell of incense and was not the cleanest. There was no bed frame--only a sagging mattress on the floor, only Indian TV shows and the BBC as TV channels, and overpriced for the amenities on offer. I left after checking in and stayed at another hotel. Apparently it is under new management--they need to be taken over again!!

much appreacited for the comment made we learn from our mistakes,

some statements were completetly not true like overpriced, shanging mattress on the floor, this is purely not true, for the TV channels (indian cable), this was replaced with DSTV, becouse of many complaints from guests about the TV channels in the rooms thus we had to change,

the hotel is maintained propely and recently we have done renovation, this to keep the palce very hygienic.

As a frequent visitor to Kampala since 1991, we have often stayed at the Shangri La (formerly the Shanghai) and were very happy. Unfortunately, the hotel has changed ownership and things are now very different. We experienced leaking sinks, kettles that did not work, toilets which appeared to be cobbled together from different places.
Both bedside lamps were broken and the adaptor plug which was provided, produced sparks when used.
Buffet breakfast was served outside in the rain with mosquitos and the food was cooked during the night and reheated on spirit heaters. Not the most hygenic or appetising way of doing this.
The staff who have always been a joy to deal with appear totally demoralised, particularly the breakfast staff and who can blame them!
During our two week stay the bed linen was only changed once, although I am happy to say the laundry service is still excellent.
When working in Africa anywhere you don't expect european standards, but at a cost of $80 per person per night, the same as a room in the UK, you don't expect the above either. What a shame, we will not be staying there again.

When you are not into huge hotels, but rather prefer small and more intimate ones, then this hotel is for you.

This hotel is very centrally located, is related to the Kampala Club, which premises you can use, offers a lot of complementary services (laundry, shoe polishing, iternet), has a nice garden to take the good breakfast , personnel is very friendly and the prices are mid-range.

The only point I could complain about is the noise level on weekends when the Kampala Club is crowded. Lots of cars will use the hotel parking and honk at the entrance.

On the other side, you may meet a minister or even the "first deputy prime minister" when mingling with the people there.

Shangri La is a nice hotel for kampala medium range standards. Breakfast is nice and the garden is pleasant. Beds are large and confortable. Free laundry and free internet access in the room are a big plus. On the down side, the fact that the bathroom receives light -an air- from the hallway. Only separation is a mosquito net. Still, overall, a positive experience.

Stayed 22 nights in the hotel while doing some work for the UN.

Nice and central just across from the Sheraton. Nice walk down through the gardens to the Speke Hotel and pizza restaurant (and others). The gates to the gardens close at 6pm.

The hotel is in an enclosed compound - with the Kampala Club and also the Shanghai Restaurant and bar. I ate at the Shanghai on 6 occasions and had a great meal each time.

You also get use of the Kampala Club facilities - gym, swimming pool, tennis court, badminton and pool.
There may have been more - but I was there to work!!

The hotel has a website - (--)
The photos are acurate of the current establishment.

Breakfast was available on the lawn (or could be had in the room if you wished). Good selection.

Internet was included in the price, as was the laundry and shoe cleaning service.

This is certainly an establishment that I would recommend - staff friendly and helpful.

I stayed at the Shangri-La for nine days in August 2006. I had a spacious, quiet and spotless clean room with 24/7 broadband internet access (included in the rate).

Staff is very friendly, reliable and efficient. Mastercard, Visa and TC are accepted (with a surcharge of 5%, which is common in the country).

Laundry is free of charge. Breakfast is not sumptuous but good (eggs, beans, flakes, toast, some fruits and juices) and served in the lovely and quiet garden. You also get the local newspapers (which are worth reading, esp. the outspoken Daily Monitor).

The hotel is safe and very well located in the heart of Kampala, next to the Sheraton (with an excellent and affordable restaurant). Several other restaurants and bars are in walking distance. And it is very safe indeed to walk around, even at night.

The Shangri-La is adjacent to the Kampala Club. As a hotel guest you can use its facilities (Tennis courts, Swimming Pool, Gym). The gym is 2000 Shillings per day (1800 = 1 USD), the pool is free (too much chlorine, though).

Transport to/from the airport can be organised by the staff. The rate is 30 USD.

Due to the fairly frequent power shortages in Kampala there wasn't enough hot water at times or just a trickle. Otherwise I would have given 5 points. The hotel has a generator (which is good for the internet access during the power shortages).

All in all: Very good value. Highly recommendable.

We stayed at the Shangri-La (aka Shanghai) 12 nights in July, before and after our safari in QENP. It shares the grounds of the Kampala Club, hence is very secure (wall, as well as manned gatehouses). And there is a Chinese restaurant (same ownership) on the grounds also...excellent food and quite reasonable in price. A good breakfast is part of the room price, and is served outside in the garden 7AM- 9AM. We had one of the air-conditioned rooms, and our 14 year old was happy to find a new TV with cable. A free laundry service is also provided...we were impressed that staff list everything on paper. As it is a small hotel, the staff know you almost immediately. Guests have privileges at the Kampala Club, so we took advantage of the outdoor pool, as well as the snooker table, the two bars, a fast computer available at a nominal cost (the hotel's computer was slow during our stay), and watched some badminton and squash games being played. All in all, quite a lucky find. We would stay there again. It's across a busy road from the Sheraton, which can be tricky to negotiate...one has to be patient.
