The Speke provided a couple of comfortable nights in a good location in downtown Kampala. Service was friendly, and the food served at breakfast on the terrace was wel prepared, as was the late night pizza that we enjoyed on the same terrace with a couple of Nile Special beers.

The popular Rock Garden bar is just next door, and whilst a good place to enjoy a few beers is also a potential source of noise if you are staying that side of the hotel. If you are an early sleeper, it might be wise to ask for a room facing out towards the other side - we had a room on that side and heard virtually nothing from the Rock Garden.

The Speke is not cheap, but the price is reasonable for the level of comfort and service in this location. The front desk has some flexibility to knock off a few dollars if you make a polite request for a better rate on arrival.

Would I stay here again when in Kampala? Very likely.

Room Tip: If you are a light or early sleeper ask for a room on the other side of the hotel from the street wh...

I was disappointed with this hotel. It is a beautiful old house with a very charming terrace garden and it is very well located. Unfortunately, the rooms were not very clean and the towels were very old and yellowish. It was too noisy. There is a disco on the ground floor and the music went on until 2 pm. I think that it is too expensive for the service offered. I was told that the Indian restaurant was excellent.
I will not go back.

Room Tip: Do not stay on top of the disco !

After a few weeks roughing it across Uganda, the Speke hotel was a glorious oasis of comfort. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the rooms quite nice. I would definitely recommend this place for travellers looking for a comfortable hotel and a good price.

I am just back from a 10 day stay at Speke. It is a traditional, well maintained hotel. My experience is that the service is excellent. Internet works well, food in the restaurants is good. Prices are ok. The atmosphere is good. The hotel is situated in the central part of Kampala, which is practical. Security is good. It is also a place to meet interesting people. All in all, Speke is highly recommended. This review is based on experiences from several stays.

Room Tip: If you stay for a longer period, the hotel has some apartments that can be rented at a reasonable pr...

Its centrally located. The views from the rooms facing the street are very good. We got excellent service at the reception as well as the restuarants, both Italian and Indian. And make sure you take proper time in having breakfast. There is just too much choice of food! A fantastic stay!!!

The restaurant serving European food is truly terrible. The service is slow, even by Ugandan standards. And when it finally arrives the food is poor, and often inedible. They struggle to fry an egg and the sandwiches and burgers are dreadful. This would be OK if it was cheap, but it is not; they charge as much as the Sheraton across the road. But the Indian restaurant is a welcome contrast. Service is fast and professional and the food is delicious and good value.

You should avoid the Speke on Friday and Saturday, unless you don't mind being hassled by the prostitutes who gather here in search of gullible - and suicidal - tourists. There's also a bar next to the Speke which plays music on Friday and Saturday so loudly that you risk permanent damage to your hearing.

I stayed at this lovely old but well maintaned property smack in the middle of Kampala during a workshop i attended recently. It is a place to visit if you are looking for a peaceful atmosphere in a lush environment full of greenery. The rooms are spacious and roomy. The management thoughtfully provided mosquito nets in the rooms. Guests can enjoy peace and quiet with a good book on the balcony of the room.
The resort is conductive for vacation, seminars, workshop or a family event like reunion, wedding or birthday. There are different choice of delicious and sumptuos food but you will find that there is an indian influence, so if you have a taste for indian cuisine you will have lots of choice.
