Being a Ugandan (living in London) I was quite keen to see what the 17 had to offer Kampala, so my family and I decided to go ahead and make our booking. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and proud that Kampala has gained a beautiful and customer focused hotel such as 17 Apartments. We arrived on the 9th of Dec although we experienced numerous problems with our luggage at Entebbe (BA had left it at Heathrow...*sigh*).
We arrived at the apartments at around 5am (should have been there at 12am) and the general manager personally rang us once we reached reception to make sure we were OK.
Turns out he had stayed up just for us - what impeccable service!
I had a little moan to Alykhan (the GM) about our luggage situation the next day and to my surprise he offered to speak to the staff at Entebbe/ BA as he had some contacts there- Hilton, Sheraton, Serena etc...please take note!
The apartments themselves are just incredible - they put some of the 4/5* hotels i've stayed in to shame! All the rooms were spacious, very clean and comfortable. You're provided with your basic amenities i.e plates, kettle, microwave, towels, wide screen tv, wifi etc so no complaints there. Internet was abit slow on one occasion but this was not a show stopper. The staff were very polite, helpful and genuinely looked happy to work there. The owners of the place were always so willing to help you with anything you needed!
It's important to remember that the apartments are self catering so it's worth going for a big shop when you arrive to ensure you're stocked up on food! Kampala is a place where you haggle, so there's always room for negotiation with practically anything and everything!. With this in mind, please don't hesitate to ask the managers where the best places to eat, shop etc are! Even some supermarkets can be more expensive than others (which I didn't know and I'm Ugandan).
We really loved having having our family visit and cook with us, some even staying for the entire day and enjoying the facilities! Renting the apartments turned out to be far better value for money than staying in a hotel in my opinion.
To top it all off, the views...Kampala has never looked so beautiful! If you can, try and get a room on the top floor.
If you want to enjoy the hassle and bustle of Kampala in the day but come back to an oasis of calm and tranquility with 5* service at night - go for 17 apartments!
Thank you to Alykhan and the rest of the team for making our stay so comfortable - you have a real gem here ! Please keep it up as we're already planning another trip later on this year.
