“Very very disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

As a resident of Kampala I welcomed the opening of this restaurant. I was there once before, and found it good - but very over priced by local standards. I went there with a number of work colleagues to try it out once more, but after placing orders, etc and being very unhappy with early starters, which we outlandishly priced for Kampala, we requested to speak to the manager. He was completely unwilling to accommodate us as customers (oh what a surprise in Uganda!), so we felt that we could not support the enterprise. We cancelled our orders and left and went to a nearby restaurant that has been around long enough to appreciate good custom.

I recall the food at Tamari as being good, but the portions are very small.

By western standards, I guess its not so expensive, but in Kampala the price of everything is just climbing and climbing and I just cannot support new establishments that are really trying to take us for a ride.

Sadly, I will not be going back here. and will NOT be recommending it to friends, colleagues and visitors alike. Too bad Krabi Thai closed, just down the road.

Hi,

Thank you for your valuable feedback. I'm sorry to hear of your experience at Tamarai as we've taken great care to price our menu accordingly. If you see our food menu, you will see the pricing to be higher mainly due to the fact that we have a lot of seafood items in the starters as well as the main courses. To the best of my knowledge we have not had any customers who have canceled their orders and left as yet. However, if you could give me your name and number i can see if any of my service staff or managers recall your experience. We ensure that our managers follow international standards of service and therefore when an issue such as yours comes in we take it very seriously. Having said that, we will do our utmost to ensure your experience doesn't recur with anyone else.
I'd request you to come in and give us one more try and myself or one of the managers can personally take your order and give you recommendations. Tamarai has built up a reputation of excellent service and decent sized portions so if you can come in again we can show you that.

“One of the best restaurants in Kampala”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2012

Came into the restaurant without a reservation and were promptly seated even though the restaurant was quite packed. The food was delicious, fresh and well repaired. Service was friendly and efficient. Would recommend this place without hesitation.

“But let them please get rid of the fountain”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2012

Beats me why all Asian-owned restaurants have to have a noisy fountain, usually makeshift concoction bang in the middle of the place, killing any possibility of having a relaxed and quiet conversation at a dinner table. That aside, fabulous food and super choice of tea from Sri Lanka. Certainly a place to go back to.

Hi,

Thanks for your valuable feedback. Im not sure about other restaurants having fountains or water bodies but the idea was to create a relaxed atmosphere as, along with the teas, gives you a soothing feel. Next time you're there please let me know and i'd be happy to show you the entire water body and the work we've put into it. We appreciate your comments on the food and teas, we have introduced a new concept in Uganda that is the tea bar and thankfully people like you are appreciating it. If you like the tea, try the high tea event we host every month (Dec 8th) as it offers pastries, cakes, savory snacks and unlimited teas all for a flat fee.

“Great Ambience but .......”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2012

Visited Tamarai last week. The ambience is fabulous and this calms down anyone who has just experienced the rigours of the Kampala traffic in getting to Tamarai......The starter, tom yang soup, was fabulous. However, the main course, a beef curry, was most disappointing. There was practically little beef in the curry - the pieces were more like flakes, as thin as corn flakes. Friendly serivce with lots of smiles. Also found prices very expensive compared with other similar restaurants in the region. UGSh 15,000 for a "Maharajah Shake" is a downright rip off!

Hi,

Firstly i'd like to thank you for your positive feedback. The relaxed feeling is exactly what we were aiming for and we're glad you appreciate it. The Tom Yum soup is also one of my favorites. My apologies for the beef curry, I'd appreciate it you'd come back and allow us to give you another. Regarding the milkshake, I'd challenge you to look around and compare other milkshake prices in other places where its pricier than ours. Also you may be finding the milkshake pricey but just to mention it also contains Dilmah tea along with the regular milkshake ingredients. We look forward to seeing you again.
