“Surprisingly GOOD”
Reviewed June 6, 2007

I found the service surprisingly very good. Airport pick-up without a hitch. Check-in, fast, and simple. The room on the 11th floor comparable to any 5 star, tea & coffee in room, but no minibar, room service prompt and cheap, great bathroom clean and modern, the room fresh and modern. Laundry was done same day, and easy. Great views of Kampala city. No noise at all! Very good breakfast, good food and service. The restaurants were very good, never a problem. Rhino pub/disco, is a pub/disco open to outside guests, which is fun and interesting. If this doesn't take your fancy, the piano lounge in the main foyer has an average selection the usual Johnny Walker RED, BLACK and BLU, but is very upmarket by East African standards, smart furnishings, great staff and italian coffees. The WIFI was up and down on connections, I had a few good hours, then nothing, the second day I tried again, nothing. Finally I booked another 3 hours only to have 30mins for email. I complained this time and was refunded all my email connection fees.
Summary: GREAT! and pleasantly surprised. Will stay again

The hotel was unfortunately very, very noisy Thursday-Sunday due to club music. Unless you are going for disco only--do not stay there or make certain you do not face either the disco belonging to the Sheraton, OR the hotel across the street. Noise until 4 am. I was there in November, the Serena opened the weekend I left!! There is a pretty garden, and a nice evening buffet. However, I will not stay there again and I travel for business to the region.

The hotel is older and has seen better days. There needs to be some cosmetic repair in some places and I found the food in the buffet and pub very bland and unimaginative.

The hotel water from the room faucets smelled heavily of Chlorine and is brown in color. The hotel turned the water off at 4AM one night to 'clean the lines' without notice to guests and did not get the water re-established until 10AM in the morning which was very inconvenient. Reception did offer to bring up buckets of water to flush the toilets and said the guests could use the hotel spa facility, but I found the failure to communicate the situation to the guests a poor choice of management, so I checked out the hotel.

The concierge staff was reluctant to help make a local phone call for me because they stated they were 'charged' to make the calls. In general, the staff did not smile much.

  • Liked — Nice little shopping arcade.
  • Disliked — Hotel water.
  • Tips/Secrets — Not a good value for money, the Kampala Serena offers more value for money.

It was nothing special for that price. basic stuff. Save your money, stay at a cheaper hotel, but enjoy the country. Go on more expensive tours and spend your money on the markets. There is some amazing stuff to buy over there. When it comes to a hotel, you nees security, a bed, and a bathroom. You will spend most of your time outside the hotel anyways eating and such. The sheraton is a good hotel, but unneccesary.

I was in Kampala between the 9th and 23rd November and during this time I wanted to buy a black forest cake - your cake was sooooo good and moist and I enjoyed the most. I purchased the whole cake for the family and within minutes it was gone! The service at the little coffee shop at that you have in the lobby was excellent. I am so impressed and wish you all in keeping up the excellent customer service. I intend to visit Kampala later this year and will definately not hesitate to order my cakes from you.

Charges a 4 star price..but except for the breakfast, the food quality is average. The rooms are very average and prices are exhorbitant and not justified.

Speke is a value for money..

The high spot of this hotel was the attentiveness of the staff to the security of their guests. The room was clean and the grounds were beautiful. I would recommend that if you stay here to find your food elsewhere, as there are good restaurants nearby that far outshine the in hotel service for less money. If you do choose to eat onsite, plan for a long wait for your meal and a letdown when it arrives.
