The performances at this place were fantastic! The food was too expensive. If you are looking for some great family outing this is the place you should go. Ndere troupe truly provides you with a variety show that show-cases music from diverse cultures in Uganda. It is always advisable to get something to eat before you arrive at the Ndere Center because their food is too expensive (delicious though). You will truly enjoy this cultural excursion!

We stumbled across this performance on a Sunday afternoon and found that it was an excellent way to spend the evening. The show cost 24,000 shillings and went for a bit longer than 3 hours.
It was a very energetic show, and all of the performers are of very high standard, as well as being amazing. The 'host' is very comical and has a wonderful sense of humour and a great way to keep the audience involved.
We have seen these kinds of shows in China, India, Sri Lanka and now in Uganda and this show was simply one of the best.

Sunday night. Let’s be honest. No one actually likes you. You’re the closest relative to Monday morning, and no one likes them either. But don’t let the impending threat of a new week of work and school end the fun of your weekend. Pack up the family and head for the Ndere Centre’s family night as an antidote to those Sunday night blues.

The Ndere Centre, home of Uganda’s world-famous traditional dance troupe, needs no introduction. In addition to their regular Wednesday and Friday shows, there is a Sunday night performance – from 6-9pm aimed at families with children. Entry is 15,000 UGX for adults and 10,000 UGX for children. The show is hosted in the outdoor amphitheatre of the Ndere Centre, just off the northern bypass in Ntinda, so hope that none of the dances are rain dances!

The only thing that could limit your enjoyment of performances is the rainy season. Make sure you bring something warm for you and the kids since it gets cold when the sun goes down.

There is a makeshift restaurant outside serving an impressive range of hot snacks and cold drinks. The choice ranges from chapatis and samosas at 2,000 UGX, through to a full buffet at 20,000 UGX and Nyama Choma at 16,000 UGX. All of this can washed down with cold sodas or beer, or hot tea on a cold night.

Although scheduled to start at 6pm, the evening’s performance sometimes gets underway late. However, you’ll forget about this as the pace of the dances makes up for any delay.

Starting with traditional Kiganda dances from the central region, the audience is treated to a virtual tour of east Africa through dance. Leaving Uganda, the troupe danced their way into Rwanda with a spectacular display by Itore (check) dancers which sees their blonde wigs cover every inch of the stage with a vigorous display. It is then on to Burundi with perhaps the most impressive performance of the evening and the highlight of the show for many. The improbably slight dancers moved gracefully across the stage carrying implausibly heavy drums which appeared to be made from solid tree trunks.

The evening is interactive with as much audience participation as possible so there is an opportunity to try and lift the drums. Even the strongest looking men in the audience failed to get them off the ground making the troupe’s performance all the more impressive.

The MC keeps the audience entertained throughout the necessary costume changes. Generally, he is extremely witty and adds to the overall entertainment of the evening, although some of his content errs on the risqué side for children who are old enough to understand or ask questions. You might want to think of an appropriate distraction for his double entendres.

Overall, the enthusiasm and tempo of the dances leaves feeling exhausted although the dancers themselves show no sign of tiring at any point. The standard of dancing was extremely high. The whole presentation was well developed and choreographed, with good lighting, sound, and well-placed intermissions to allow for almost seamless costume changes. There was enough dancing to feel like you got your money’s worth, and enough laughter to feel like you haven’t only watched dancing.

It’s definitely worth a try if you want to spend some more time with the family and do something a little different to delay the impending inevitability of Monday morning.

Buffer queue is to the left, barbeque to the right-there's no sign to distinguish but its great and the dancing outstanding. Traffic in Kampala can be heavy so allow a bit of extra time in the evening rush hour to get there.

Nice spot for tourists. I went to the Sunday show, and it's entertaining. Great thing to do with kids and well-situated - Ntinda. But be warned that' it's very long!
