New City Annex is a great budget place in central Kampala. It's clean, safe with friendly staff and great location - opposite the National Theatre & craft village, 5min walking from the Garden City and Oasis shopping centre. Great indian restaurants on the same street - Hare Krishna's Govinda and Chat Massala. However, it's a budget place after all. The small rooms at the front (uo the narrow stairs) are ridicolous, size of a shoe box and with thin walls. Rooms at the backside are much nicer and quieter. I wouldn't bother with the restaurant - ate there three times and wasn't impressed at all.

We had a very enjoyable night in the New City Annex. The staff were friendly and the building and rooms clean. One problem was staircases are narrow and could be awkward. The restaurant service and food was surprisingly good with staff serving very professionally.

Very central in Kampala, can walk to malls and craft markets and city centre. Rooms spacious, shared bathrooms good with hot showers. Good restaurants very nearby. Lots of stairs so not great if lots of bags. 2 incidents with the staff where they were slightly dishonest - firstly I booked a room on the phone for a certain price and when we arrived they had put the price up and denied ever telling me the first price, second they tried to charge my friend triple the price for a CD someone had left for her to pick up....presumable the difference was going to go in their pockets. But otherwise fine.

I stayed last summer in the new annex with my 2 boys and we loved the place! During our 6 weeks travel through uganda it was our place to come back to, do our washing and relax in between. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, always cheerful, the restaurants in and around new annex are superb (try the 2 Indian places on the right and to the left!!) and the location is super-convenient. The National Theatre has great evening shows in the garden and it's just great to just cross the road and to be back "home". Will be back in April!

this place has many great sides! first, location is amazing! i stayed in old kampala for 2 weeks and moved here...great! street is full of good bars and restaurants. even house restaurant is amazing! national theater is just next door and there are events each night there. main shopping malls are just 5 min walk from it. next door to hotel is good language school (why i came here). place is super clean! rooms are ok, depends what you want. good thing is that they have rooms for each pocket. usd 7 are tiny windowless rooms. usd 10 is decent room with a window or a fan. more expensive are self contained. this place is very good deal indeed!

Room Tip: depends on your budget
