“Perfect retreat in the middle of Kampala”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

You cannot find a better hide away to relax at the end of the day, in the middle of Kampala. It's a clean and relaxing oasis in the middle of the vibrant city center of Kampala.
It's cheaper than the other back packers in Kampala. It's more central, situated a couple of minutes walk from the old taxi park. It has literary everything you need nearby, a big supermarket if you need something special or just want to wander around to see what is available in Ugandan supermarkets, a small shop for quick-buys if you know what you need, a pharmacy if your health is weak and ceveral cybers if you need to update your facebook status and check up on your friends back home. Everything just on the same block.
They serve excellent breakfast at the lodge. For free you get coffee/tea with toast, add 5000shillings and get some fruit salad, yogurt or cereals to fill up for an active day. They also serve nice lunch and dinner in the restaurant downstairs, and chicken with chips is available on the other side of the street if you feel like something cheap and easy (or just didn't make it in time before the restaurant closed, that's around 10pm).

I tried out a number of other accommodations before I found this one. I've stayed at the Tuhende Safari Lodhe a couple of times now, and will not stay anywhere else in Kampala (unless I have to). It really is as good as it get's, and on top of it all: The staff are super friendly!

Room Tip: The dorms are wonderful, the beds are spacious and mosquito nets acquired. Most of the time they don...

The food was superb! It´s really one of the best deals in town. Nowhere else we have eaten better in Uganda. Staff and the owner are friendly and helpful.
Only the rooms are not so good. The toilet was dirty and the room very hot at night, stuffy and small. At the end, we would give arround three and a half star.

The restraunt at this hotel is unique in that it is a set 4 course dinner...you choose the BBQ item for the grill...steak, chicken, whole fresh Tilappia fish, Goat, or a vegetarian feature..we have eaten at this restraunt several times in each of the last 4 years and have always been most impressed with the service and in particular the Food Quality and Portion size..big...It is impossible to get into Kampala city for dinner because of the traffic jams, but this restraunt is quite close to where we stay on Mengo hill and a short taxi ride..The location is close to a busy and bustling road and there have been mosquitoes on some visits..take you Deet repellent. The cost is extremely low and excellent value for this dinner. Service can be good but sometimes off handed young servers don't add much to the experience, depending on if the owner is on site. Highly recommended as an active outdoor experience and great food, the style not to be found anywhere else in Kampala...

stayed ten days, the service was excellent and the food was so tasty and cooked to its perfect taste, I would recommend Tuhende Safari Lodge very strongly. If you have already booked at another place I beg you to just go eat at Tuhende Safari Lodges in Old Kampala.

Room Tip: Ask for room with balcony or if you like more privacy then at the back where you can relax aby the p...

We chose this hotel because it is excellently located at walking distance of the bus terminals.

This is a good but basic hotel. And when I say basic I mean REALLY basic: beds are small and the shared bathroom is of the 'no frills' type.
The double room we had was too hot in the night, even in October. Therefore we asked for a fan but unfortunately didn't get one. The hotel recently raised prices for double rooms to 80,000 per night, which I personally think makes the double rooms overpriced (the dorms might be still a good option).

The staff is friendly and is also working in the recommendable restaurant on the ground floor that has a nice terrace next to Martin Rd. The food in the restaurant is very tasteful. Non-vegetarians should try the steak and will not be dissatisfied!

Tip: ask the staff for their almost-opened hotel at Sir Apollo Kagwa Rd, only a few blocks away. We have seen at and it looks friendly, new and will be reasonably priced. The hotels share (good) management and staff so I am sure anyone working here can guide you there.

I stayed here in July of 2012 for 2 nights in the dorms. The place is clean and the staff are friendly, though the layout is a little odd. The mosquito nets were well placed and had no holes, which is rare in cheap backpacker places in Uganda. There are 2 dormitories, each with 2 rooms of 4 beds each. The hotel is centrally located in Old Kampala, right near the Gaddafi mosque and the new taxi park (much closer than Backpackers or Red Chile, which are 2km outside of town).

I didn't eat there, but I've heard to food is great, and the dorm bed includes tea and bread. Overall, it's a decent place to stay, and is very good for it's price point (for dorms, I can't speak to the prices on other rooms!)

Room Tip: The rooms in the dorms next to the balcony are very loud, it's quieter in the rooms off the cour...

Recommended! This was a good backpacker place right in the craziness of Kampala. The food was great, and the showers were warm. While some of the other backpacker places may be better for meeting other people, Tuhende kept you right in the action of Kampala. However, with this, comes a lot of city noises (dog chorus at 4 in the morning, etc...) and pollution. Even still, the staff was excellent - especially Innocent who helped us get to our early morning bus as well as buy a cellphone. Good job, guys.
