I stayed here for 2 nights in a double room. The hostel is ok but a bit run down, could do with a bit of a revamp with the many people coming through. I can see it as a good starting place if you are travelling or want to do some reasonably priced tours. It was a bit pricey for what it was as room fairly basic and moderately clean. Food great and well priced, especially the Sunday night barbeque. Very loud at night so not a great nights sleep as music never stops before midnight. Just a 1000 schilling, 15 minute ride to central Kampala in a shared taxi.

Dear wwglobetrotting

Thanks a lot for taking the time to review Red Chilli. We are so glad you enjoyed the food, especially the barbecue.

We agree that the place needs a bit of a re-vamp, which is why we are re-building the whole of Red Chilli on a brand new purpose built site, which should be open by the end of this year! The new place will be much bigger, with more facilities such as decent swimming pool, TV room, cook and laundry area and beautiful peaceful surroundings with lake view. We are trying as hard as possible to keep the old site looking as good as it always has done in the meantime - and we believe that our rooms, though basic, represent excellent value for money - starting from just US$15 per room per night. Prices will remain as competitive in the new site.

We have always kept our rooms in a separate building to the bar to reduce noise levels and make an effort to turn down the music at 11 and turn it off altogether at 12.

I very much hope you will come and visit us in the new site some day!
Best regards
Debbie

After a bit of stress we found the place by minibus taxi. The map on the website is wrong: you should get off at the Gaz petrol station, not the Shell (which is actually on the right as you come from town).

We were warmly welcomed and shown to our quite large double room with shared bathroom. There was a mozzie net, but luckily we didn't need the fan as it didn't work. The room seemed fine until we tried to sleep. The noise from the adjacent shower and toilets was intrusive- noisy door latches and hinges and sounds of running water etc.

The bar/restaurant area is the best thing about this place. There's a good menu, great coffee and a friendly atmosphere - a great place to meet other travellers.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms near the shared bathroom

Dear Alby S

Many thanks for the review - I am so glad you appreciated the atmosphere and food at Red Chilli but am sorry the adjacent bathroom to your room was a little noisy! If there is a next time, I would suggest requesting a room further away from the bathrooms (we usually find people want to be as close to them as possible so usually give this as first choice!) or an ensuite room. We will take a look at the fan also, but if reported to our office, this would have been replaced as soon as possible.

Thanks for the point about the map on the website too - that Shell station changed hands a while back now and we should change it!

Best regards
Debbie

Found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, the rooms to be clean and basic but very acceptable and the price for a double room to be pretty decent. Breakfast is somewhat pricey and may take some time to arrive, but is pretty good. All the fruit in the breakfasts is picked fresh on the day from the grounds and it tastes pretty damn good!

Decent location in Kampala (not that you need a great location because there are bodas everywhere), decent food, and the most comfortable / clean dorms I saw in Uganda. Not a bad place overall. Internet is slow, you need to bring your own lock if you want to store valuables & are staying in a dorm, and it's a bit of a haul from the airport, but overall this is a good bet for Kampala that I'd recommend. Staff is generally helpful and friendly.

The staff at this place is the worst. Starting at check-in when the man at the bar/reception was dismissive and rude, and ending with the check-out process, when the credit card machine was broken and the staff was unwilling to work with us to accept Kenyan shillings (at a much higher than market rate) making us late for the airport.

It also took us a good half hour to figure out which rooms were available for which nights because it seems like there was no good system in place to keep records of this.

With the exception of a few instances, the interactions with the staff were frustrating, stressful, unproductive, and generally unpleasant.

Dear Yevie 115

Many thanks for taking the time to review Red Chilli. I was so sad to hear that you found the customer service so terrible, particularly since we really pride ourselves on our friendly staff and have received so many compliments to this effect in recent reviews. We have already spoken to the member of reception staff you refer to because you passed on your feedback in the office at the time of paying. He is really shocked and sorry that you felt him to be rude and dismissive.

I am sorry we could not make your checking-out process any smoother for you. Our credit card machine was not in fact broken, as I believe was explained to you at the time - the network was temporarily down and we could not obtain communication with the bank. Sadly this happens regularly in Uganda and we advertise this risk on our website, as well as on our notice boards at the hostel and strongly advise not to leave paying by visa card until the last minute to avoid such situations.

Again, as advertised, we accept only Uganda Shillings or US Dollars cash in the event of a network failure or a credit card rejection. I regret that we do not accept Kenya Shillings or any other currency.

Best regards
Debbie

I stayed here for one night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottages were spacious and comfortable, perfect for 4 friends stayed together. The barbeque for dinner was great and in particular the bar was lively and had a pool tablw along with sports coverage and internet, the latter quite a rarity in the other places that I've stayed in during my trip of Uganda. The monkeys around the place provided early morning entertainment and good photo oppertunities and overall it was definitely a good stay!

Red Chili is perfect for backpackers and budget travelers. It's in a nice quite part of Kampala but not to far to get into town, either by taxi or boda-boda which is an interesting experience in Kampala traffic!

The food is cheap and the bar is pretty good too, all the usual Ugandan beers. But what helped really make this place great for a backpacker was the free internet - not often you manage to find consistent free wifi and also computer internet. Slow, yes, slower than elsewhere, not really. And some of the great value tours they can organize for you to QENP, Murchison Falls and Kibale etc, really good base to organize trips across Uganda from, whether on safari or over to Jinja for whitewater adventures.

Of course not perfect, but definitely a great place to head to if you've just arrived in Uganda, always plenty of other travelers, lots to do and see in Kampala and plenty of trips and excursions heading out.

Just watch out for the pesky monkeys if you're camping! Like I said - TIA!
