Stayed at Red Chilli for a little more than a week. Camped for the first few nights in my own tent, then in anticipation of an early morning departure, switched to a dorm room. The dorm room was good value.

Nice facilities, good food and very nice staff. It seems to be a confluence of travelers heading in all different directions on their own, or as part of an overland trip. If you are looking for information about travelling around a certain place on the continent, you will probably be able to find it.

We stayed here as a group of 9 adults and 2 kids for just one night, as part of a road trip. It's a welcoming place. We stayed in two of the two-bedroom cottages which had loads of space and were comfy. There were kitchens although we didn't make use of them so don't know how well stocked they were, although I think only one had a cooker.

The communal space is nice, and the staff were truly excellent. The food was good. They have a big BBQ on Sunday evenings, which I'm told was good although don't hang around like we did - otherwise you'll find there's no food left - but we were able to order a limited selection from the normal menu.

They were v helpful arranging our next plans for Jinja.

Would recommend.

Dear Fiona E

Many thanks for the positive feedback. So sorry you weren't able to enjoy our barbecue - we always try to over-cater but are sometimes overwhelmed by the demand! Hopefully you'll be able to come back one of these Sundays in the future and we'll make sure we reserve you a plate or two this time!

Thanks again and best regards

Set in a quieter suburb on the east side of Kampala, they have a lovely garden. Where camping and their rooms are set up. The kitchen and common area are in the center and the food, particularly the pizzas and Sunday night BBQ. These are the good things about the place.

Our first stay there we were shown to our room which had a little tiny bolt for a lock once we were in. It didn't really make us feel secure. We were also told that there was hot water in the shower by our room. When none came and we asked the staff they looked at us like we were idiots and said that there was a water heater switch, we've travelled enough to look for those, and there was none (though on inspection we found the switch in a maintenance cupboard next to the washroom - not sure how you are supposed to turn on the water there).

We had arranged for a trip through red chilli and left our bags in the storage lockers, when we got back they had found there way to the bottom of a pile of bags that had been flung into the lockers. Luckily none of our stuff was broken, but one of our bags was soaking wet because it had been in a pool of water. We tried to tell the staff that that is no way to treat people's belongings but they did not seem to care.

For our second stay, the security on the room was better, but the mosquito net had some holes in it, and the fan was missing a knob to turn it on.

Other annoyances include the lack of any outlets in private rooms. In east Africa, one of the reasons we'd pay for a private room was so that we had a secure place to charge our phones and cameras. Here you have to watch over them in the common area. Also, while convent for accounting, having to walk back to one bar with your bill, paying, and then taking it back to the kitchen is a bit of a pain.

Dear Mattdy

Thanks for taking the time to review Red Chilli. I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed by your experience with us...particularly with regards to our staff not seeming to care. We have always prided ourselves on our friendly atmosphere and generally receive very good feedback on our staff so I'm really sorry we failed on this occasion.

We will look into the issues of the flimsy door bolt and also the water heater switch (it would be really helpful if you could let us know which room you stayed in?). You are right, the cheaper twin rooms and also the dorms usually do not have power sockets in them - for these guests charging is only available in the public bar area. However, if you were to upgrade to a larger room or cottage, they all have plug sockets available.

Sorry also to hear that your bags got wet whilst in our care. You have said they were in the lockers but I'm thinking they must have been in the larger baggage store at the front of the building as the individual lockers all have private locks on them and belongings cannot be moved by our staff. We've never had a problem with water in there before, even in the strongest Ugandan storm, so I am guessing that someone else storing bags in there must have accidentally dropped some liquid.

I would urge anyone with any complaints to please direct them to our management staff rather than our bar staff... we welcome anyone to pop into our management office located in our reception. Hopefully we can then put any issues right as soon as possible without spoiling your stay.

Wishing you all the best
Debbie

Our group needed an inexpensive place to stay while in Kampala, and Red Chilli was recommended to us. We actually found it to exceed our expectations. Five of us stayed in a cottage, and it was much larger than we thought it would be! Accommodations are basic, but very adequate, especially for the cost. The staff was very friendly and helpful before arrival and after. They can help arrange transport around Kampala easily. We found the other guests to be very pleasant, and the lounge/reception area was a fun place to hang out and meet other people. It was quiet at night (except for the wildlife!), and the food and drink selection was good. The only two negative aspects were check-in time and lack of towels. The website clearly says in 2 places that check-in is at noon. We arrived at 10, knowing we were early, but were told check-in wasn't until 2, but they'd try to get our place ready sooner. About 1:00 we asked again, but were again told that check-in wasn't until 2. It was 2:00 when our place was ready. That should definitely be changed on the website. We were also short 2 towels in our cottage. I asked for more towels twice, but there weren't any. So, plan on checking in at 2 and bring a towel and you'll enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: The cottage was very spacious, but the twin rooms were tiny. However, for the great price, it was a...

Dear Jennifer W

Thanks so much for taking the time to review Red Chilli. We're so glad you enjoyed the place - in particular the food and our staff!

Our website publishes the correct check-in time of noon, so I'm not sure what went on on your arrival. I can only guess that the housekeepers had got behind after a mass check-out and that they had to push your check-in time back to 2.00. If so, this should have been explained properly to you on arrival and I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this must have caused you. I must also apologise for the lack of towels during your stay..they seem to vanish as fast as we can replace them..but we've recently stocked up again, so hopefully if you ever pass this way again, we should have enough for you all!

Best regards
Debbie

I will never forget the very helpful smilling staff!!! Whatever I asked for they found a solution within 10 minutes. The guys are very welcoming and they make you feel like you're part of the family! They serve simple but delicious food and they have a very intersting drinks menu.... Internet is available on the on the 2 lobby computers and also on wireless. I just stayed there for 3 days but it was enough to convince me to go back there whenever I'll be in Kampala again.
And it is incredibly cheap for waht they offer!!!

Room Tip: Try the cottages, you won't regret it!!!

I stayed with a group at the Red Chilli Hideaway for four nights in September. We stayed in a two bedroom bugalow with a bath, kitchen, dinning room and living room. The room was about $65 US per night and could sleep 5. This is a 50's built compound with many room types and many international travelers. The property felt very safe within a walled gated compound with a guard at the gate 24/7. During our stay we did have issues with the toilet tank not filling and no hot water. The toilet was repaired on the second day but they could not seem to get the hot water to work. They did adjust the price for this inconvenience.

We ate at the property on several occasions and found everything we ordered to be very good. From a salami and cheese grilled sandwich to steak, to pizza I enjoyed everything I had. The staff at the property is excellent. On woman in the kitchen took my name on Thursday when we arrived and the next time I ordered on Saturday afternoon she still remembered my name.....how did she do that.

Everyone at the property is very friendly. By the last night there I was amazed how many travelers and staff knew my 17 year old son. Everyone greeted him by name.

This property is like know where we have stayed before. It is rustic. It did provide everything we needed in lodging for the end of our time in Uganda.
