I had written a review of my stay but I do not see it posted, so here it is again.
I stayed with a small group at Paxland and was impressed and relieved that there were flush toilets and showers. This was important for me. The grounds were very well kept, the rooms are very clean and the bed linens are changed daily. There is laundry service available. You must ask for this. Traditional African food will be served if asked. Ask. It is an experience for an American. I enjoyed it. Remember that you are in Africa and they operate on their time schedule. It takes a while for food to be served but considering the facilities, it is normal and common in EVERY restaurant in Uganda that I ate at. There are no air conditioners, or t.v's in the rooms. You are in Africa. Through no fault of management the electricity goes off every few days for a few hours and you may not always have hot water due to this. The host, Betty, is most accomodating. She will try her best to provide what you ask for if it is available. Remember, again, where you are. Betty and staff love to talk to you about their country and enjoy hearing of yours. Their English is quite good and the are most pleasant. Try the African tea. The breakfast provided is sparse but ask for eggs and you will get them. I stayed for about two weeks and would stay again. The rates are very reasonable. I have no other hotel to compare to but I would think others are similar with facilities available.

Stayed: May 2007

Soroti is a small town in Uganda about 4-7 hours from Kampala (depending on traffic and the road conditions). The Paxland Hotel hosts a newly opened small motel/cottage on the Lira Road leading out of town. The owner, Betty, is a single mother raising 5 children and is very friendly to mzungus (non Africans). She will give you the regular African rate if you barter with her. We took a group of workshop students there in December.

There are 6 rooms in the hotel with personal bathrooms and 9 cottage spaces with shared bathrooms. There are two rooms in the main building where the breakfast area is. I highly recommend away from these. They are hot and have bugs come in from the kitchen. However they are right by the shared showers and toilet.

The good:
The rooms are so cheap! 35,000 shillings a night. That included the use of the huge conference room in the hotel with electricity piped in and lots of tables and chairs for meetings.
The rooms are sparkling clean with clean sheets and towels every day.
The dinners you can arrange (if you talk to Betty by noon each day) are amazing!! Usually it was 5,000 shillings per person. Some sample dishes were fresh stewed beans, cabbage, rice, fried potatoes, fried fish, chicken stew, beef stew, fried chicken, baked chicken, chips.
There's fresh beer (3,000 shillings) and soda (2,000 shillings) to purchase. If you want afternoon tea with toast and jam its 2,000 shillings.

The bad:
The breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Just hot water for Nescafe, African tea, bananas, plain bread and sometimes watermelon and pineapple or passion fruit. That's it. Betty said we could ask for more variety ahead of time but that never seemed to work.
Dinner was so slow! We scheduled it for the first few nights at 7 and it arrived around 8. So, we started to schedule dinner at 6 so we could eat by 7 when it finally arrived.
Only two rooms have fans and the rest get pretty toasty at night during the hot season.

The ugly:
The water tank had to be filled each day via jerry cans from the well. Betty rarely kept water in reserve even though we would come back and need showers every night so the water ran out most nights. It was really frustrating. You can offer to pay more at end of the trip (I'd suggest 5,000 shillings per night) on the condition of having water in the tanks and see if that motivates the staff to keep the tank full.

The cottages are supposed to have the bathrooms finished by 2008 sometime. They were rustic but very roomy. The room with the fan was wonderful and peaceful for a week's stay.
