“Lovely Colonial Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2007

This is a large lovely old colonial house once belonging to the Reilly Family now converted into a high end safari lodge.

The staff can't do enough for you and keep the place spotless. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price and they were nice enough to launder some clothes for me at no extra cost. You have to book through Big Game Park of Swaziland and they handle the reservations very efficiently and even remind the taxi driver to pick you up at the airport on the day of your arrival. (Warning: driver is very friendly and punctual but the car has seen much better days).

The Sunset sfari drive is pleasant with bathing hippos and crocs, but there are no big game in this park--it's just a lovely place to relax and chill. Expect 50s style bedrooms and bathrooms and you won't be disappointed. You can also take in a Swazi dancing event at the tourist camp closer to the entatrnce to the Park in the evening. Meals are old style English cooking.

If coming from the airport in Manzini, stop by Swazi candles which has lovely souvenirs. Nearby are weavers and other craft ships. Close to the entrance of the park on the way to Mbane is the National Museum which is worth a look and a bit further huge outdoor craft stalls.

I stayed one night, but wished I had more time to stay here and use this as a base for exploring more of this small but lovely country with its super friendly people.

This place has seen better days.

It claims to be, and charges the prices of, an "exclusive" lodge. However you should be aware that the accommodation is let down badly by the bathroom arrangements and that it is also in desperate need of updating and redecorating to bring it up to the standard that it claims to maintain. The service available from the staff could also be improved. Food is straightforward but with no choice available, which you would probably expect from such a place that this claims to be.

The "upside" is that it is in stunning location, right in the middle of the Mlilwane Game Reserve and overlooking the Elzuwini Valley.

Worth a look, but don't expect too much for your money !

This is probably the best place you can stay in Swaziland. What it lacks in comfort it compensates in character. It is situated right in the middle of a Game reserve and it is the seat of a conservationist family. The rooms are standard with antiquated plumbing, but the staff is very attendive and the food really good. The breakfast are served on the terrace and the dinner by the camp fire. They are all included in the price.

You will need a car to move around and you should not miss the opportunity to join the excursions offered by the reserve. The are options to walk or take mini safaris. The aftrenoon safari that gets you to the top of the hill is trully wonderful.

Where do we begin? Was it the daily bushbaby banana feeding frenzy on the roof? Or the fantastic walk to the bushman caves and Execution Rock? Or standing by the hippo pool watching warthogs just getting on with their own business? Not really sure but this place definitely comes very near to the top of the list of places to stay for us as a family.
The furnishings, rooms, and the ambience of the lodge are firmly rooted in the days when things happened at more sensible pace - Ruth and Joanna cook the most wonderful food, keep the place absolutely spotless, and the bathrooms are an experience not to be missed. Only a few people can stay here at a time but if you do go then try to accede to Ted Reillys wishes and spend more than a single day within the Mlilwane Game Reserve that the lodge overlooks. Take the day trip to sister reserve Mkhaya - ask for Joseph as your guide and you'll be walking with the white rhino before you know it! Unbelievable experiences all round and our teenagers would go back there tomorrow. Finally, Swaziland is an experience in itself so don't just fly in and fly out - take the time to meet the great people who live there and don't miss the glass factory at Ngwenya!!
