“great views at a price though”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2010

There are a lot of positive things to be said about the Mountain Inn, the scenic views from the beautiful garden, the little swimming pool, afternoon tea on the veranda, the friendly staff, the nice atmosphere, the arrangement of the buildings, and much more. The only things I wasn't too pleased about were the rate for a single room (ZAR 775 per night) and the buzzer-kind-of noise of the air condition next door (room 32). Otherwise I believe the Mountain Inn is a good choice for Mbabane.

I am a consultant who spend 60-70% of my time in hotels. I am a single woman and go through all the insecurities and anxiety most women travellers do. As a first time visitor to Swaziland, it was even more worrisome. I felt like I was at home in Mountain Inn. Despite a huge rush of guests like the inn always seemed to have, I was treated expeditiously and with alot of warmth, all the way from the front desk to the restaurant, and management and owner of the Inn. I stayed for a little more than a week, and almost everyone went out of the way to make sure I had a comfortable stay. Besides the warmth and the hospitality, the room was nice, the view was magnificent and there was a wide variety of food, so much so that I didn't venture out more than twice and was not bored once. The food was also very delicious. I also rented out the conference rooms for one of my workshops and I must say the facilities and the staff were very good . One of my colleagues was stranded in Joburg airport and the staff and manager Patrick went out of his way to sort this issue out and help me.I give this Inn a Five star and I highly recommend this to all, who venture out to Swaziland.

We stayed in Mountain Inn 11th to 15th February having had the hotel recommended by family. Having read other reviews here, most of which are perhaps a little dissapointing, I was very happy with all aspects of the hotel, and I often stay in quality business hotels though Europe and the USA. The real difference is this is Swaziland, not New York. The hotel was a great experience, the staff were helpful, the food was the best hotel food I have had in Africa and the view down the valley was breathtaking.

The free wi-fi was useful, and worked in our room and the reception staff were attentive, helpful as were the restaurant staff. I do not know why another reviewed stated about lack of choice at breakfast because there was huge choice of fruit, yoghurt, cereals, pastries, muffins and breads, as well as cooked to order bacon, sausages, eggs/omelettes from which you could add baked beans, potatoes etc. from the buffet.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone heading to Mbabane.

I stayed here in Nov-Dec 2009 & hosted two workshops.I could not have chosen a better place. The staff in all functions were great. Timely service with a smile. The food is good, the restaurant bar is well stocked. Try the steaks. Salads could do with a re-vamp. Breads & Pastries a house speciality. Try the breakfast apple pastries – magic. This is not a 5 Star Hilton but a very worthy 3+Star family owned jewel on the outskirts of Mbabane with a stunning view down a valley – see their website!. Package tours seem to only stop here for one night – what a waste. Business people will enjoy the free wifi & space to hold mini meetings. An adjoining Irish style pub meets the needs of Sports fans & provides a chance to meet a good mix of locals. It was being upgraded in December. Good value for money. A bit of old Africa.

The good bits - There is a bus that runs to/from Mazini airport, the view is good, the staff are friendly, the grounds are clean and there is free wi-fi access at various points around the hotel and grounds. It was amusing to see all the teenagers grouped in the breakfast room in the evening, "Facebooking" how their holiday was going to friends back home.

Less good bits: the "official" images of the hotel have been seriously recoloured - the public rooms, especially the dining room, are dark an uninviting. The menu never changes and is the same for lunch and dinner, so if you are there for several days it is entirely possible you will run out of choices. Breakfast is a buffet, as is one choice of evening meal. There is one Chinese and one Indian restaurant and a bar for lunches a short drive away "down the valley" - reception staff can provide details.

There is a bar attached to the hotel, but it is not a place to go for conversation - I doubt I have ever been in a noisier pub anywhere. There a 3 tv screens constantly on sport and lots of very loud locals seemingly shouting at the top of their voice(s). We bought drinks and brought them back upstairs into the hotel. The hotel badly needs a Residents Bar.

There are 2 dedicated internet terminals, if you didn't bring your own wi-fi, but I felt printing was pricey. The reception staff seem to be multi-lingual, speaking the local language, English and French, amongst others. The room key was a bit of thin metal that slots into the round door handle - it confused the French guests, and it is easy to skin your knuckles while "holding and turning" the door knob.

So, noting we were there in the quite season, the hotel is of European standard, it is a little pricey, the bar is awful, the food average and it is probably best for business users rather than holidaymakers. Recommended for a short stay, but not for a fortnight.

The hotel is situated at the end of a residential road off the main ring road. Because of its location the hotel does command great views over the Valley, however we found the location to be out of the way and a good 10 minutes drive to anywhere else of interest.
We were initially impressed by the bright & smart reception & smooth check in. But we were disappointed once we were shown our room. Our family room was in the middle of the gardens - both bedrooms had small windows with heavy net curtains & the windows only overlooked other buildings (one staff area and the other a conference room.) Our room certainly didn't resemble the room on the internet or the hotel's publicity brochure! The bathroom especially was very tired but the bedrooms were also in need of refurbishing. The kids room had a wall heater which looked unsafe & very dated.
Without doubt the most disappointing aspect of this hotel was the terrible food & the poor service, especially in the restaurant. On the first night we booked a table in the restaurant. The room was very dingy & poorly furnished. I asked the restaurant manager to get the table which was very wobbly fixed - but he literally just looked at me & walked away. We didn't fancy the buffet & tried the a la carte. I plumped for the chicken curry - the sauce was tasty but the rice was very overcooked & the meat was mainly bone. Our wine was warm & the service was very slow. Needless to say we didn't eat in the restaurant again - on other nights we dined at Calabash restaurant (excellent service & delicious food) & also at the the Quartermain Inn.
Breakfast is served in an upstairs dining room with picture windows. Again the view is the redeeming feature of this hotel. The breakfast room decor was at least 20 years out of date & pretty tatty. The breakfast choice is limited. On the second day I was told there were no croissants left as there were too many people. The service is very slow. We ordered soft poached eggs & bacon - the eggs came hard & the bacon was literally dripping in fat.
The hotel seemed to have several meeting & conference rooms. This hotel may be better suited to business travellers but I certainly would not recommend it to holiday travellers. The price we paid certainly didn't match the facilities & service we received.

My wife and I stayed for two nights and found this a convenient hotel. The high elevation of the hotel provides for a comparatively cool climate and for a great view from the garden terrace and pool down to the lowveld (lowlands), a few hundred meters (yards) in elevation below .

The dinner restaurant has a buffet or a la carte menu with local specialties, there are good and reasonable priced South African wines on the list. On warm evenings the restaurant terrace with the same view as the garden terrace is an enjoyable place for dinner.
A bar is part of the restaurant; if you don't expect more than the standard range of liquor you won't be disappointed. A sports bar is located in a separate room.

Larger rooms in the restaurant area can be rented for conferences and functions.

Our room had the usual comforts for a 2- to 3-star house in European or US terms. Some rooms and sections of the building may appear a bit outdated and could benefit from modernization.

The staff and the owner are hospitable and knowledgable.

If you look for a well-managed hotel with friendly service in a great location then this is your place. You get good value for money and there isn't too much choice anyway.
