“Not to be missed”
Reviewed January 10, 2012

Tuti Island used to be a real 'unspoilt' beauty of Khartoum until the bridge was built and opened the island to traffic. Those of us who got to enjoy it by crossing over in a little tin boat and walk around the island - we found the poeple friendly and welcoming and nice. Now it is still a must see, but the whole culture and environment has changed.

“Rural Escape”
Reviewed April 11, 2010

Tuti Island is a must see when visiting Khartoum. It is located at the junction of the Blue and White Nile. This island itself is not large, you are able to walk across it in just a few hours. It is definitely worth the trip however, as it gives you a break from 'City Life' and takes you into a more rural setting.

There are two ways to reach the island. You may travel across the recently built bridge which connects the island to Khartoum, or you may catch a ferry from Khartoum or Omdurman.

I went on a ferry boat from Omdurman (cost was about 0.50 SDG for one person). Upon reaching the island, you may rent drivers to take you around the island, or you may simply walk. I chose to walk, and was glad that I did. The area on the island ismainly used for farming. It was fun to see the people working the fields and to see farm animals roaming about.

I had brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed it under a mango tree. Then I sat in one of the many 'tea houses' along the bank and had hot spearmint tea.

If you speak a little arabic it really helps to make the experience more enjoyable.

I would highly recommend Tuti Island to anyone visiting Khartoum! It puts the surrounding cities and the culture of Northern Sudan into perspective.
