the development & banners all around almost makes it look non existent. it is otherwise very beautiful. but the massive & huge look dosen't show.

The Cotton Tree is THE landmark in Freetown. The point that the first freed slaves made for on landing. Now the centre of the town, if you are staying in an outlying area and need to got a cab to town just tell the driver 'the Cotton Tree' and you know where you will end up - no problem.

Echoing other reviews, the tree is an excellent sight simply due to the sheer size of the thing, but you couple that with the symbolism and its pretty impressive. I agree with another reviewer that the billboards around the base of the tree are a bit tacky, but some of them depict the previous presidents so I can deal with that...Don't miss the peace and cultural monument between the tree and the Presidential residence.

The Cotton Tree is absolutely huge! It towers over most of the buildings surrounding it. It's defintely worth seeing, and you can see the bats that sleep in it during the day. A highlight of Freetown

Just across the road is a museum that you can be shown round for 10,000 leones. It's all outdoors and tells you about the history of the country.
