In my travels throughout Africa, this has to be one of the better places I have been. The beaches were clean, beautiful and the people friendly. The Country Lodge resort we stayed in was really nice and they had an excellent restaurant and bar. The hotel was clean and the staff accommodating. They arranged a tour for us and we had a really nice time with no incidents

This is a city with a view!!! No matter where you are, you are within eye-shot of the sea. I often close my eyes and visualize Freetown as a tumbling mass of rocks, rushing relentlessly to the sea only to develop cold feet for the water at the very last moment and then melt away into the beautiful sand that adorns her glorious beaches. These breath-taking views make driving around Freetown such a pleasure. With a few good beaches of it's own; you're always 20minutes drive away from all the other beaches. The local food is rich and adventurous (never in my wildest Nigerian dreams did I imagine cassava, sweet potato and sorrel leaves could be eaten as delicious sauces to accompany rice), the markets are colourful and crowded and you can find the most amazing stuff there at good bargains; and the people are friendly to an incredible degree.

Like any city with mountains that lead down to the sea, FT has some gorgeous view points. Dramatic clouds sweep down over the green mountain peaks, while bright sun shines over the sea. Massive villas in the Hill Station area are built all over the mountains, and those lucky residents must live a charmed existence. However, look close and venture downtown, and the city really is an over crowded cesspit with nothing modern at all. Downtown is gridlocked with traffic, crowds and rubbish,, yet you will stumble across some beautiful old colonial buidlings still in use. Be sure to visit Big Market and the Museum, Avoid Kissy in East FT at all cost; its the worst area of filth, traffic and ruined roads. Most visitors stay in the West FT, Aberdeen area and Lumley Beach, which is the city's main public beach; it has a certain laid back charm to it. There are now 6 or 7 decent, international restaurants located throughout the city, so you can eat quite well, and there are plenty of fun bars. FT offers some of the best fresh seafood of anywhere. Dont expect ATM machines to work well, and parking your car anywhere is a nightmare, pay someone to park in front of their place. Road condition is horrendous, ditto the traffic. Local FT people are for the most part very friendly and out going. Dont hesitate to ask for help if you get lost, everyone is willing to help and have a chat. Thus far, Ive not had any problem with theft or any other hassle in that regard. Most expats in FT are here for work or business purposes, so its never going to be a tourist city, at least not on our lifetime ...

This is one of the few capitals that you may find so much contrast, You can be laying on a fine beach right in the capital, then go back to your hotel and have no electricity for a couple of hours. You can be dinning in a good restaurant or enjoy a drink in a lovely place and then drive back through the slams in dark dilapidated roads. But on the whole ot is 100% worthwhile.

I was living in Freetown more than 3 month, it is dirty and boring. No place to go in the evening, road are terrible and a lot of traffic. I was there because if my business, but if I be a tourist I would not go there.
