In my rule book, you are not allowed to go to Rwanda without knowing it's history and visiting this site. Yes, we have all heard something or another about the genocide but this is the place to learn the real facts and to grow a heart for Rwanda's people. This will change your life for ever and you will be enriched and start to understand and see things with different perspectives. I have gone many times and will never bring anyone to Rwanda and not stop by this site, it is a MUST SEE!!!!

It's very well-maintained, and the atmosphere is great for those that want to read up on the topic (it's pretty quiet). There's a small gift shop outside - you can pick up books there! It's a moving experience all-together and I highly recommend anyone who visits to Rwanda to check it out.

The Genocide Memorial Center provides you with both the historical context for the events that lead up to the genocide and also survivor testimonies of the horrifying violence that in some places of the country close to eliminated the Tutsi minority.

The exhibit provides a good balance between facts and eyewitness accounts. I had read about the genocide previously, but walking through the exhibits provided a good summary. Walking through the last exhibit portraying some of the many children who were killed is heartbreaking. Walking back out into what is a pretty peaceful Kigali seems just incredible after that. The genocide is an important part of Rwanda's history and every visitor should make sure to learn more in order to understand the country better.

When media houses reports about a genocide or acts against humanity appear far from where one is, it is hard to appreciate what eye witnesses and victims went through. This is the sense i got when i visited the genocide memorial in Kigali recently. From pre-genocide to post genocide experiences, the memorial exhibition sections take you back beyond the 1994 genocide. This makes one appreciate life and respect for other people. The differences are for me a social creation, humanity is one and all people need to respect that. Kudos for Kigali and Rwandan government for the thoughts and action to have this important memorial as a center for learning!

Don't miss this when visiting Rwanda. Very impressive and nicely done, also home to a huge mass grave of over 250.000 people. A sad but important place.
