“Ground Level Villa Type Rooms at a great Price”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

Landed in Kigali without any reservations, was recommended Che Lando by the taxi folk at the airport. The hotel has several low rise rooms with unique names. Mine was named "Georgette" and had a comfortable bed, mosquito net, a small veranda with a chair.
Each room is isolated from the others by a thicket of plants. Breakfast was served on the first floor of another building, typical continental fresh fruits and Spanish omelette.

The complex is very lively, saw a memorable football match at their open air bar while enjoying local beer and brochettes (skewers of meat and chicken). The complex is located by a main road and near to the airport. Motorbikes and taxis are available till late night just outside. Other sites such as KBC and MilColine are nearby.

Room Tip: Chose rooms away from the main bar area and the main road.

I guess its a good place, comparing to other similar hotels in Kigali. We were traveling on business, so I was expecting more (based on some reviews here). This is not a 3 star hotel, by any stretch of imagination. Toiletries - one tiny piece of soap. We had to go across the street to a supermarket to get a normal size soap and shampoo. One day the hot water just disappeared (the issue was fixed within a day), and the water pressure was so low, it was practically impossible to take a shower. The room got very hot, there is no air conditioner, not even a fan. Positive - good, friendly service and their nice restaurant. (if you are looking for a nice place to stay in Kigali, go to Serena).

Hotel Chez Lando met us at the airport with a waiting vehicle. When all the luggage fit, but not all of the people, Hotel Chez Lando returned to the airport for a second trip free of charge to ensure we all arrived. Our rooms were very clean - with nice amenities such as television, sitting chairs, newspapers, toiletries, and hot water in each room. The front desk was helpful in both coordinating a vehicle to take us to the National Genocide Memorial and in exchanging money. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others staying in Kigali. It felt very safe, even in a ground floor room.

Not far from the airport but also near interesting locations in Kigali this hotel is a wonderful place to stay whether you are on business or pleasure. Unlike the intense, busy, apartment building-like grand hotels in many African capitals, this one is a bit like some of the house-compound hotels in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The family of the late moderate political leader Landoald Ndasingwa built this complex slowly over the years from the popular family restaurant of the same name, by adding adjacent properties as they became available. The rooms are disposed around a number of brick paved courtyards with lush gardens dripping with lovely vegetation and shaded with expansive tree crowns. The birds calls echo through the gardens and pathways all day long. The rooms have balconies or patios, tiled floors and large bathrooms with tubs, showers, and lots of hot water. Breakfast, included, is up above in a separate building whose terrace looks over part of the city. I've not tried the restaurant but it is well-patronized by locals and visitors alike. The employees are extremely polite and helpful and friendly.

Located in the Remera district of Kigali, between the airport and town, lies Chez Lando, a comfortable and quiet retreat with spacious rooms, lovely amenities such as a minibar, boutique, lovely buffet breakfast, and complimentary shuttle to and from the airport. Chez Lando is a very popular restaurant, so every moto and cab driver knows how to get there. Rooms are reasonable priced (I paid $100/night for a renovated room with a small balcony facing a well-manicured garden) and the service is top-notch. I will certainly stay there again upon my return to Kigali.

Room Tip: Ask to be placed in the new wing, away from the street...traffic noise can be intense.

Spent one night on two separate occasions at Chez Lando, and the experience was worlds apart. The first time I'd just arrived in Kigali and my driver got me to the hotel about 8 p.m.
Since it was pre-paid and I was leaving in the early morning, the desk clerk gave me a single room behind the reception area. Bad, bad, bad! These must have been the original rooms when the hotel was built--worn out bed, leaky shower and blackened bathroom walls. It was only $60, but wouldn't have fared well in the $20 rooms so abundant in Africa.
Later I complained to the manager and local tour operator, so expected something better upon my return a week later. Well, the squeaky wheel gets the grease--I was given #177, a top floor room in the bungalow fourplexes that was spacious, spotless and overlooking a nice flower garden.
Obviously these bungalow rooms are the newest-- the rack rate for a single is $40USD more than the old rooms--and are nice enough to ensure most visitors would give CL a repeat visit.
The restaurant is a beehive of social and business activities for the local elite, and is a great place to sit and watch the wheelings and dealings of Kigali's booming economy.
Chez Lando is also close to the hotel, and is reasonably quiet--if you get a room in the centre of the property away from the busy streets surrounding it.
Overall, the management saved the hotel from a terrible review I was writing after coming up with a good room after I complained.
If you don't ask, or look like you don't care or can't afford the newer rooms, I suspect you'd be put in the wretched reception building rooms in the blink of an eye.
It is the hotel business, after all....

Room Tip: Ask for Room 177 in the garden fourplex bungalows.

i've stayed at chez lando twice but only for one night each time in transit. it's a pretty good deal for the price in kigali. the location is convenient to the airport (a 10 minute taxi ride) and near several restaurants (walking distance to the very good italian "sol et luna", for example). it's not particularly charming or special, but pretty average for african hotels. it's clean enough but at little run down feeling.
