A friend of mine was staying at Chez Lando in a room on the ground floor. Even the UN advise its staff never to take a room on the ground floor as thieves can easily enter your room from an outside window without having to climb up the building. His top of the line computer was stolen from his room at Chez Lando and he suspects Chez Lando staff were complicit in the theft (either cleaning and/or security staff) since cleaning staff were the only ones to see his computer in his room and security staff because they knew his routine of leaving the room for dinner at a restaurant away from the hotel. The thieves entered his room easily be jarring open the outside window. Luckily, the Rwanda police have a good reputation of not demanding extra payments to complete investigations. One point of information: If you experience a theft in Rwanda, type up your report yourself in English and, if you can in French, to provide to the police. This will help them complete the police report.

Room Tip: To avoid thefts, select a room at least 3 floors about and hide all your valuables or store them in the hotel safe.

I recently organized a two-day workshop at Chez Lando and stayed there for 5 nights. It has plenty of rooms ($60 or $100 depending on where you stay) with free wifi and two conference centers. The best part though, is the large outside bar/restaurant area, complete with pool tables, tvs and most importantly, wifi. It is a perfect atmosphere in which to have meetings, do work, or just relax after a long day. The conference facilty itself was a great size, equipped with a projector, speakers, and flipcharts, with a pleasant adjacent outside area where we had tea breaks and lunch. The staff was very helpful - special thanks to Malik with whom I worked to organize the conference - he was very knowledgeable and accommodating, helping the workshop to go off without a hitch!

The rooms were fairly basic but had everything that was necessary. It was lovely to have a balcony and the view was wonderful, surrounded by trees, flora and the city. Th staff were lovely and greeted us with a freshly made juice upon arrival. And when I had trouble locking my room one of the cleaning staff was more an willing to help me out. The food in the restraurant was averag, but once again the staff were lovely. Over all it was a lovely place, with a wonderful atmosphere, but a little overpriced for what you got.

We were a group of five spending a total of four nights. We all got such a warm welcome and were comfortably looked after. Free breakfast was good, but you needed to be there around 0700 to have the best choice of food. It was good to feel that we were helping a Rwandan family by staying there and will certainly return.

Room Tip: Newer Rondavel rooms are best but cheaper rooms in main block are good value.

Good working stay with no problems. Wifi worked though got slow some times. Check billing, they got the number of nights wrong at first.
