“Hotel Okapi convenient, kind, no problems”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

My 3-week stay at the Okapi (January 2013) was good, especially during the time I stayed on the "non-street (cobblestone)" side, with its panoramic view of the hills, and took full advantage of its balcony. Bed, bathroom, storage space are good, as is the restaurant--especially the spaghetti bolognaise; cabbage, carrot, avocado salad; and local beer. Okapi's free breakfasts always included omelets, fresh fruits (.g. mango, papaya, or passion fruit) and an array of samosas, rolled-up crepe, or other goodies. The staff was very helpful, with special thanks to Victor at the front desk and Christian at the restaurant. The location is great, a short walk to buy bottled water or get to the central business district.

i spend almost each weekend in kigali. okapi turned to be fairly priced option. am usually having $35 single room but have to say that even within that range, rooms can be very different. i have tried about 7-8 rooms by now and while some of them are basic and very ok, others are quite below same standard.
hotel is centrally located and yes, there is noise from outside.
staff might not seem very friendly and helpful in the beginning, but for me as a returning guest, they are all okay.
restaurant has decent food, spicy chicken wings are actually great.
there is great massage salon in hotel and Moses knows many different types of massages - perfect after a crazy kigali night out :-)
i would say, all in all, decent stay for that money. i do guess if you have better budget available, go for something upmarket. otherwise, for $35, this is very good

Room Tip: 604 and 605

The Okapi hotel is moderately priced, very nicely furnished, and is in an excellent location within easy walking distance of downtown. It serves a very nice breakfast in a room with a view of the surrounding area. The relaxed atmosphere at breakfast facilitated some interesting conversations; one in particular with a fellow American who collected gold nuggets from all over the world. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, recommending a great Indian restaurant for dinner. The only downside was that many of the rooms overlook a busy uphill street; early morning truck traffic was a real pain until I got switched to a different room.

Room Tip: Choose an interior room to avoid truck noise

I arrived at Okapi, planning to stay for only 1 night, due to bad reviews. It was a rainstorm at 5 pm when I arrived on the bus from Burundi. It seemed the most decent, closest place. I ended up staying for 2 weeks! They have 3 classes of rooms, for singles shared bathroom (never saw), continued rooms in a lower level on a rickety iron staircase and then a nice rooms with balcony and sat. t.v. in the main building in the hotel. First night did the rickety room stairs thing for $45, won't do again, but I spent the other 2 weeks on the third floor with hot water, sat. t.v. and a big nice bed and clean room. Since then there has been manager change and rooms are even cheaper. I am a back packer at heart and have worked in development for years and I don't really think you'll get a better, decent, central deal in Kigali. Walking distance from dowtown and stores, supermarkets..Staff, mgmt, very attentive. I also bought artwork off of the walls from an asiring, creative art. Buffet breakfast included at hotel. Real mix of NGO workers, business people and tourists. Oh Ps. Note the club across the street broadcasts music until 2am fri and Sat.

I stayed here for one night en route to Goma - and I have to say that even with the threat of rebel activity around Goma it was far preferable to staying any more time at Okapi. The room I had was cramped, dirty & smelly, the bedding may have been fresh but the mattress beneath it had clearly suffered a recent accident. When I asked to be moved the reception simply said - you must speak to manager in the morning (I was checking out at 6.30 am!) although they accepted they had more rooms available. Breakfast was basically hard boiled eggs plus dry bread, and coffee was lukewarm and weak. For the $10 charged it was an insult. It may be a cheap hotel but for very little more there are other options - not fancy but clean and pleasant to stay it. One to avoid!!

Room Tip: If you want a good room suggest you try another hotel!

Stayed there for 4 night in the suite...85 usd per night, 2 days without water with people going on telling us it was coming 5 minutes later but it lasted 2 days. Had to get the shower in the building next door, where cockroches were on the shower. Owner told us he was giving a free meal at his indian restaurant to repay us...gave us a 15 usd coupon without drinks...breakfast very poor. Service friendly. Good central position, right next to Place de L'unité national.

A small defined hotel in the middle of the great capital of Rwanda -Kigali, with a good view of the Kigali Hills of Nyabugogo, this really moved me. The rooms were well furnished and for the cuisine served with tropical fruits that really made me wanting the more. The staff service cannot be explained very welcoming and friendly.
