I recently visited the Inema Art Center in Kigali, Rwanda and was fascinated by the beautiful, colorful art work that welcomes you to this studio in the heart of Kigali. Each artist has his or her very own style and for art lovers of any kind a stop at this studio is a must.
My first visit was on a saturday and I could already hear music playing from a far. Once I walked down to the entrance, I saw approx. 20 kids painting in the front yard. Emmanuel, the founder of Inema Art Center also runs a program called Art with a mission, teaching young orphans from the Kigali area how to paint. The kids were amazing; talented, friendly and so open-hearted. It is great to see that Inema Art Center is giving back to the community and helping children that haven't had the easiest childhood.

Don't miss a visit to Kigali's Gem and support these local artists and the wonderful things they are doing!!

Stepping through the doors at Inema Art Center in Kigali, Rwanda you know you have come to a place with heart. Talented and giving brothers Innocent and Emmanuel have created a space of creativity, culture and community. It is a place of development of talent of artists and community. Gorgeous paintings by the brothers and other resident artists are exhibited and there is a workshop and shop for women artisans creating jewelry and other crafts. The children's dance program teaches children and youth traditional Rwandan dance and along with that a deeper confidence and sense of self. The dance program also raises funds to pay for school fees for kids in program.

Inspirational place to visit and support..

The Inema Arts Center is the wonderful, realized dream of two amazing young artists, Innocent and Emmanuel. These self-taught artists, who happen to be brothers, have created a space where the arts are celebrated as a way of reaching and teaching people...other artists, women, children, and visitors like me. From the colorful mural on the front gate to the numerous sculptures on the grounds to the unique variety of paintings on the gallery walls to the many creative enterprises being offered for sale in the Center's shop, the beauty and energy of Inema draws the visitor in. And the hospitality of artists just draws you in. If you are in Kigali, this is a must-see place to visit, an unforgettable experience.

I had not heard of Inema prior to our first visit to Rwanda, but came across the reviews on TA a few days before our late-April 2013 trip & am so glad to have heard about this place. We visited & met brothers Emmanuel & Innocent - they are so nice! The gallery houses their art as well of those local artists in residence & have rooms displaying art by orphans as well as crafts by local women. We bought a painting (which we love!), Rwandan basket & a necklace. Inema supports various causes within the community - art that gives back. What else could you ask for? Inema, please come to Chicago & do a show here!!!

Inema Arts Center is a dream come true for its founders, innocent and Emmanuel. As soon as you pull up to the colourful gate and hear the sound of singing and drumming from the community dance troupe that is sponsored by the center, you know you have discovered one of Kigali's gems and that you've come to a place that is truly part of the community! You get to meet the artists, check out their incredible work and hear the stories of how they all came to choose this profession in a country where there is little support. It's a place of refuge and hope. The center welcomes everyone and encourages both young and old to reach in and find his/ her inner artist through traditional dance lessons, storytelling seminars, etc. Believe me when I say you would be missing out if you didn't stop by during your stay in Rwanda! I stop by every chance I get! It's a place full of inspiration and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow!
