“A nice enough place to stop on the way”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

Kigali is notoriously bad for budget accommodation and so this place seems to do a good job, given the reputation of the city. It's in a nice peaceful area (there's not really one ''central'' area in Kigali and buses and moto taxis are frequent). I stayed in two different dorms, one cleaner than the other, the kitchen is great, and the showers are always hot. There are nice communcal areas where it's very easy to meet other people, and the rate includes breakfast, which is enough to keep you filled up for the day. I would hapilly stay here again, or recommend it to others.

We stayed here for a 1 night overstay, arrived late in the evening and although we booked a double room, we were put in a 4 persons dorm.. We found underwear in one of the beds and shared bathrooms really need a update. The location is not central at all, takes half an hour by local minibus to arrive at the city centre. Breakfast was already finished when we arrived (8.30 AM) and not restocked.

Discover Rwanda is a lovely little backpackers with a great atmosphere, run by a wonderful team. By staying here, you are providing support for the genocide prevention and memorial organisations. The rooms are basic, but very clean and tidy. The hostel bar is set over a camp field where you can listen to the birds chirping in amongst the trees. Moto taxis linger outside to provide transport to required destinations - an easy jump on/jump off form of transport. A great choice for those on a budget!

After reading the reviews here, I was disappointed with the hostel. The bathrooms need repairing/re-doing, as there are things like missing taps, shower heads and doors that need adjusting. Things that were broken remained broken on my second stay, nothing seemed to have been fixed. Nice that they include breakfast, but it would be good to have things ready, as it took so long each day for breakfast to come out. Lights were dim too, so the evenings are quite dim in the hostel. Not good for reading.

The location is not ideal, as it is a way from the city centre (bit far to walk each time). Internet was terrible, often not working at all. Just up the road is a cafe that has faster internet, but the staff in the hostel were unable to fix the problems with their internet.

The problem is that Kigali does not offer many alternatives, so you are really stuck with this one. It is not a bad hostel, just that there are lots of small problems which do not seem to get fixed. If you can live with the bathroom/internet/lighting problems then it is fine, just remember that it is not in the city centre. Bit hard to judge it, but overall, I would say that it is average.

Room Tip: from what I could see, the private rooms were better, and the four bed dorm had a lot more space tha...

I stayed in the hostel for two weeks or so while I was visiting a friend who was completing academic field work in Kigali. The hostel was safe and secure, with good internet access (by local standards - checking email and Facebook is fine, but don't expect anything spectacular), a well-priced bar and friendly, helpful staff.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and was served as a buffet - toast, coffee and chipatis or fried potatoes, and a fruit salad - and a substantial lunch and dinner were available at a good price. Hot water is available between 6.30 and 9.30 in the mornings and evenings and there are more than enough bathrooms.

The hostel is a fair distance from the centre of Kigali and many of the areas you may wish to visit, but motorcycle taxis, taxis and buses are all to hand. The modern, 15-or-so storey building directly opposite the hostel houses a branch of the Bank of Kigali with an ATM, two western-influenced café-restaurants, a pharmacy and a bookshop.

Kigali does not cater for backpacking budgets (yet) but Discover Rwanda seems to be the first Backpackers in the city. It is a great choice and is priced well below any other options. The staff were helpful and friendly and had a lot of information on transport pricing, places to visit and where to eat.

The facilities are clean and we spent nights in the tent, dorm rooms and private double rooms and enjoyed it all. There are numerous coffee shops and places to eat within walking distance but it's easy enough to hop on a Boda bike and head somewhere a bit further.

We stayed here for 4.5 weeks full time while on placement in Kigali. It's only 7 km from the CBD and this is actually one of the cheapest hostels in Kigali, which is generally an extremely expensive city for Africa. The staff became like family and made a huge effort to accomodate our needs. The internet was good and the water was reliable if you used it earlier in the morning but didn't have the best water pressure. The staff are always cleaning and the floor is mopped daily.

The breakfast was also fantastic and they would always serve it early for us when we had to leave by 7AM. The rooms were clean and the mosquito nets were washed regularly which was a nice touch. The bar was handy and I loved that they had a survey to ask us what we wanted them to organise for us. In the end they organised a bar crawl for the residents there at the time and managed to get 25 of us to attend a massive night. It was a huge success and a testament to the hostel's organisational capability.

The garden is cute and very well maintained. You can wash your own clothes (buckets provided) or pay $2 for someone to do it for you. There is plenty of line to hang up your clothes too. There is a gate guard on all the time and a safe place to park my car securely.

Overall I had a great experience and would strongly recommend it as a budget location for travellers or extended stays (with cheaper and negotiable prices for longer stays).
